Before I buy a PC...

Now that school is out I've been able to start working some more and am just about ready to make the jump and get a PC. I'm going to have a lot more questions right before I actually get it, but for now here is one big one:

I've got several paint chips on my car, a few on the hood from stones, and a couple on some side panels. Is this something that should be fixed before I run a PC over it or will the PC not do any additional dammage to these parts?

I'm hesitant to fix them myself, but then again whatever I attempt to do will probably look better than the chips themselves. FYI I have a Black 2003 Olds Alero, so I don't know if anyone knows a good match for chip repair for that car.

Also, is using the PC on the plastic bumper ok? I'm not sure when it happened but the back of my car apparently got hit with some overspray because I had to take a razor to the back window. Looking at the bumper you can't really tell anything is there, but I can feel it. I should try and clay it and see if that helps. There are a couple light scratches I want to get rid of on the bumper anyways so I would still like to PC it.

If it were me I would entirely polish the car first before repairing the paint chips. Maybe leave the areas in need of chip repair free of any wax or sealant.

It should be fine to polish plastic painted bumpers with a PC. I do it all the time with my PC and Cyclo. In fact, I ventured very gingerly with a rotary :RPMs not exceeding 1100-1400 or so and used a PC in between.

I can understand the reservations so you could keep the PC setting on low for a while if you like, like maybe up to 3 or 4 tops. You could always monitor the temperature of the paint with an infrared thermometer ( next on my list) as well for further reassurance.
 
Bill - Good to know that I'll be fine using the PC on the bumper. Thanks for the tip about keeping the speed set low until I'm more comfortable too.

Another thing I wanted to add:

I don't have a garage so is it ok to PC outdoors or do I need to borrow a friends garage to do any work.
 
You can work outside a lot easier if you have polishes, waxes, etc. that are "sun-safe." If not, try moving into a shade, buying a canopy, or borrowing that garage.
