Baking Soda?

Is baking soda safe at all to use on an OEM aluminum alloy wheel?

On my Nissan Xterra I have 1 stock aluminum wheel that has some clearcoat damage on it from back before I knew anything about detailing. It is now my test wheel. :doh I have some black spots on the front of the wheel in the corners between the 5 spokes. I have tried clay, AIO, Meg's UC, etc. I decided for no other reason than to try, that I would rub a little bit of damp baking soda with a MF on to the spot. It worked like magic!!! I just don't know if it is safe to use or I just got lucky with that one spot. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks! :xyxthumbs

I cant think of anything it would harm chemically. It is abrasive and i would think it would mar the finish pretty badly.

i've used it to remove polish after polishing my aluminum alloys, works great.

did you do this a while ago? I am concerned with how the aluminum reacts over time. I hear that Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can react with aluminum. This would normally sway me far away from using it, but it just seems to work so darn well lol.
