hey im going to detail a black yukon XL denali within the next few days. this has to be one of the most neglected paint finishes ive ever seen. the swirls are HORRIBLE. i tried putting two coats of meguiars #7 and it hid some of them, but it was still really bad. should i use some SMR with the PC? and follow with some imperial hand glaze? then finish up with a good coat of wax? does this sound resonable? im thining of doing two coats of SMR cuz this paint looks so bad.

Hi! :wavey Welcome to the forum!

There are a lot of posts on swirl mark removal (one recent one on doing this by hand ----Removing Swirl Marks Thread )

Also, check out the search function and you'll find tons of info!!

Another good source is the e-book Autopia Car Care Guide which will give you all the info you need on just about everything about detailing ~ and it's on sale now, and it supports the forum!

Read, read, read! :xyxthumbs

You'll probably have to go with 3M FI-II and SMR or the Meguiar's DACP then Swirl Free Polish to get the results your looking for, tho. Check out those links above for the detailed (no pun intended) how-to's etc.

Happy detailing!

This is what I would do:

1. Dawn Wash (or a good paint cleaner like Medallion, HD Cleanse, etc).

2. Clay bar it. It's probably never been clayed and most likely needs it. It's also a GM car and was probably transported by rail, instead of ship and needs a claying even more for that reason.

3. 3M Finesse it II or Griot's MP3 (stronger than SMR) applied by machine for gross marks.

4. Meguiars #9 2.0 or SMR for to clean up the marks (if FI2 doesn't finish nicely).

5. A polish to remove oxydation if you think it's nessecary.

6. A glaze to fill any marks missed (again only if nessecary).

7. Wax
