Bad Deal?

so i went to meet this guy about buying his car yesterday "as is", but i wanted to have someone look at before i bought. I was willing to pay the mechanic to look it over for me, so i knew exactly what i was buying. But the guy seems very reluctant to let me do this eventho i am paying to get it looked at. I don't understand why he wouldn't want me to this, unless he was trying to hide something. It starting to sound like a bad deal to me. What do u guys think?

He's hiding something.
Offer to let him drop it off and pick it up in case he's worried about that.
If he is still retiscent, he know's something you don't yet know.
 
yea its always a good thing to get it checked out, even if the dealer cant do anything for you about the problem, you will know what your getting into and what needs to be fixed. I would do what PEI said.

that was the plan i gave him...he still acted strange about it
 
If he is listing it as an "AS IS" then you know already that the car has issues.
But the owner should atleast be decent enough to give you a heads up, on how severe the issues are. Like if he knows the tranny isn't too much longer for he should list it that way.

i agree...i told him i expected the car to have problems...i just wanted to make sure there were no major problems
 
Anytime that you can't get a mechanic to look at the vehicle should give you a good indication that there is something wrong with the vehicle. In my opinion, this guy is acting pretty shady and I would drop all negotiations immediately. Don't let yourself be suckered into this deal.

i'm gonna go with what audiboy said on this one. Anytime you can't get a mechanic to look at the vehicle, should tell you there is something majorly wrong with the car. DON'T BUY IT.

Yep! I just got done dealing with a customer who bought a car and didn't have it looked at first. He paid $2100 for the car thinking it was mechanically just fine ('93 Mazda MX6 with 121K miles) and within a couple hours I'd located and diagnosed about $1500 in OBVIOUS damage to critical engine components. Let's just say that was a fun one... now I can't stop laughing at how bad the guy got suckered.
 
btw, as a pro detailer, I offer a $25 Detailer's Analysis for people thinking of a used car purchase. I've been able to diagnose bade repaints, point out dirty fluids, bad rubber, unfixable interiors, and other places to negotiate.

Just an idea.

I don't know about in this case, but I personally never let anyone take a test drive of a vehicle I'm selling unless I'm in it with them. It never leaves my sight and ultimate posession. However, I would certainly be open to letting a mechanic check things out (as long as they weren't a grease-monkey type that would make a complete mess):D

Interesting. I usually just do that for free if the person only has a couple cars to look at, never thought about charging for it!

Can both of you shed some more light on the subject for me. What you look for, how you look for, etc.......it seems like something extra I can add. Just shoot me a PM with some info if you can.......THANKS!!!
