Backing plate that comes with 7336sp

If I were to stick some velcro on the bottom of it, would it be just as good as any other 6" backing plate you can buy? It looks like it would work pretty decent. Suggestions?
 
Hmm, it might work.



I compared mine with a Meguiars backing plate. The PC one is larger and a bit firmer.



I don't see much risk in trying it out, so go for it.
 
Make sure whatever glue you use will hold the velcro on at high speed. Otherwise you'll have an airborne pad on your hands...
 
lol...I dont have any pads yet, the only ones that I do have are these cheap "nikota" ones that I bought from Big Lots forlike 2 bucks. I wouldn't dare use them on paint, Excel detail is out of 6" backing plates so I thought I'd wait on that before I go buying a bunch of stuff. I just thought about coming up woth something to use on this old rusted up thunderbird my gf's grandpa has sitting in the back yardon bricks. Just so I could get I feel for the PC. If everything goes wrong, no harm done, I'll only lose maybe 3 or 4 bucks. :dance
 
well.... i dunno. After he gets a feel for the PC on the older car, he might have to do some serious work on a good car. For that I'd go with excel's 4" pads seeing as they are more effective at defect removal than the larger pads.
 
OK he can get the 2.75" one too. But even though the 4" pads are handy for defect removal, he's going to want some of the larger pads for applying cleaners/glazes/waxes etc...
 
ok then, get a small backing plate and a cutting and a light cut 4" pad, then get the larger backing plate and the larger polishing and finishing pad. best of both worlds :D
 
lol...I'd be waaay to scared to work with spot pads this early, at least not on my baby. I'm waiting patiently for exceldetail to get some more 6" backing plates into use on paint. The whole bastardized backing plate idea is just something to celan showers or metal with with those really cheap pads.
 
I was planning on using the pads from excel, I had thought that the bigger backing plate would give it more pressure, and would allow me to work in tight spots better. How will a 5" plate better? Teach me thy ways. :dance
 
The 5" plate is better because the Propel pads have a depression in the back of the pad, which happens to be 5" in diameter. It's exactly the size of the 5" backing plate, which makes it very easy to center the pad every time.



I think the smaller backing plate would enable you to better access tight areas, because you can move the pad under a spoiler, for example. The larger the diameter of the backing plate, the less pad you can move under the spoiler without having the plate contact the spoiler. I think that made sense...
