back and forth or circular motion?

I am not to sure if I read it here or @ Autopia...
But when applying a sealent or wax is it better to apply in a back and forth motion or in a circular. (for me thats gonna be EX and Natty's)

I thought I read that it was better to go in a back and forth motion (following the airflow over the paint) rather than a circular

Which is prefferable???

The reason why some people go back and forth is because it's less noticable to see potential scratches. I for one haven't figured this one out. I mean think about it. When we use a pc or rotary the pad is spinning in a circular motion, not back and forth. So, for me the obvious way would be circular.

I have always used circular and haven't had any problems. i guess it's just easier for me to overlap and make sure I don't miss any spots.....my 2 cents

Well, I think the back and forth application/removal process for LSP's is recommended for a few reasons. The first reason is that vertical spider web marks are less noticeable than circular spider web marks. The other deals with the finished look. Some people feel that products that are applied from the top down on both vertical and horizontal surfaces increases the light refraction off the paint surface, and creates more clarity of the finish. Also, the back and forth application/removal process is usually favored by people who are attempting to "layer" products, as that motion is generally percieved to be gentler, and allows the products to be layered with more success.

Of course, there are others who believe that a circular application method "works" the product into the paint surface and "levels" it better....................... therefore creating a better finish.

Whether there is much credence to any of those opinions is in the eye of the beholder.

To be honest, when it comes to the spider web marks, if you are working on a clean paint surface, and are using good clean applicators/towels, either application method should work fine. As for the aesthetics............... you'll have to decide on that one.
