Autopart store Microfibers?

I picked up a 10 pack of microfiber towels from Advanced auto for $10. They are 12inches by 12inchs. They have worked great for me for drying the jeep (usually takes 2-3) and for removing wax. The label says "Made in china" and I was wondering if these are going to scratch my jeep or my Nissan?



I understand these are not the best but will they do harm? If so, what can I use them for and what towels should I get. I am not a professional and only do my personal cars so I am not going to drop $100 on towels.
 
You'll be OK with them. IMO, anything that comes in contact with your paint has the potential to do harm. To me, the difference between expensive and moderately priced towels isn't great enough to dramatically reduce the possibility of harm and warrant the extra cost.

Besides, we're talking about the difference in inherently soft towels, not the difference between high-end MF's and gravel.

If you were working on exotic cars for high paying clients, I'd give it a second thought; otherwise, don't sweat it.
 
....IMO/IME the difference between towels (in regard to softness, design/construction, quality, etc.) can be quite significant. That's not to say that decent, inexpensive towels don't exist. ....it's just that I have found some towels can really be that bad. The CD test is one quick & easy way to test them out though.
 
im not sure i would trust the ones that come wrapped up in a little uncovered bundle. ive seen people stocking drop them on the not so clean floor along with customers. and when i drop a microfiber, i dont reuse it on paint.but on the other hand, the viking microfibers already mentioned in this thread have been good in my experience. they come in a big plastic wraped package. they have yet to scratch/swirl my very soft honda paint.
 
I so badly want to buy some $45+ for 3 rag deal. But I just can't see paying that much for rags!!! Also The green MF ones at target are great!
 
The no name brand ones at the auto parts stores are always a gamble. Always do the "cd test". As far as bang for the $, IMO it is hard to beat the Sam's club towels, 30 for ~$10 and they are softer than the costco ones.
 
well guys I went to sears (owned by k-mart) and the Viking package was $18 so I headed down the street to K-mart and the towel bundle was $11. Why would the same thing be $7 more at sears.....weird.

odd...they are on sale for 9.99 till sunday at Sears.



no matter, sears will price match it.





I got 4 sets of the Viking ones in the box for 9.99 each.
 
just cd tested mine. only 2 passed. one came with my ONR and the other with my Meguiars claybar kit. mannnn hahah.
 
I must be the only one on the planet who doesn't think that the "CD Scratch Test" works.



I can take any of my MF towels, even the most expensive ones, and they will *all* scratch a CD. In fact, I have a very hard time being able to tell any difference between a MF and a Terry towel in terms of how much they scratch a CD.:nixweiss
 
I like the small Autozone ones, and usually buy a big package from Costco every spring too for general purpose.
