Just trying to get an idea of when everyone purchased/owned their first home.

Another thing that would be interesting to know would be the length of time spent in that house before moving on to the next, for whatever reason. Post that separately, since I can't have two polls in the same post.

Thanks in advance for all the replies :2thumbs:

A Condo for 87,000 then sold it to get married for 155,000 two years later

I now have a house bought it for 187,000 and in the 3 years i have owned it it's 300,000+ now

My home was worth about $115k when I got it and it's now close to $500k. I'm not selling and moving cause well, we CAN'T! The stuff is just too expensive here. It's kind of strange to see someone moving in and then learning what they paid!

When we bought our first house or we owned our first house. Two different questions IMO. WE bought our first home when we were 22, we are 28 now hope to have it paid for within the next ten years. Once it is paid for, then I will be a homeowner, right now the home owns me. :)

Same boat as spoiledman, paid 80K, it is now worth about 200K, can't move because we will never find something in our price range...just hope the wife isn't pregnant again.

Mrs. Gonzo and I paid $113K for our first house, stayed there for 12 years, sold it for $140K.

We bought our present home in 1998 for $210K, it's now worth approximately $490K! :bigups

Bought first house in 1996 same year we were married. I was 25 and the house cost $113,000. Now house prices are so high I cann't afford to buy a bigger one in my area so I am going to build an addition. My house is now worth about $170,000. Now a bad investment, alot better that the current stock market.

For those of you who that have large sums of equity in your homes, why can't you sell your homes at market value, then use the cash from the transaction towards the new home?

Well just to purchase another house the same price as mine I would be looking at a big property tax increase. To truly upgrade we would also have to move to something in the 650-700k range and it just doesn't fit the budget.

Holy, crap!!

You people need to move to Texas where you can get 3500+ square feet in a NICE neighborhood for $275k.

When we get to retirement age and I don't HAVE to deal with the heat, we plan to sell and move away from the coast.

Hehe, TN will work too. In Memphis 275,000 will buy you a nice crib. :)

You should see what it gets you in Springfield Missouri! My dad has a house in Memphis and 2 in Vegas. One house in Vegas has appreciated enough to pay for the other two!

Not too far from me in Wilton, CT, an entry level home around 1500-2000 sq. ft with a yard so small you can touch your neighbor costs over $500k. Living in the NE has become damn near impossible for entry levelers.

Sounds like Annapolis, Maryland. For a 2 bedroom, 2 bath 1400sq.ft. condo without garage, you're looking at $280K+.

We're hoping to purchase the place we're renting right now from the landlord. We found out that he's seriously contemplating selling it too! :woohoo:

Anyways, keep voting and posting people. This is a lot of very interesting information so far

Got my first house at age 27, stayed there a year or so. Once Accumulatorette moved in on a permanent basis, we moved to the second house. We were there 12 years, during the last two we were doing the current house.

My wife has family in TN, and yeah, the prices are reasonable, but it's *really* all about the location there.

Yep, I know what you mean. I live about 15 miles outside of the city of Memphis where 250K gets you 4000 square feet and some of the cheapest property taxes in TN. I am just going to relax and throw large sums of money at my principle. :)

If you are *in* the city though, your location is definitely EVERYTHING.

I bought my first house in 1995 for 100K, 1700sqf, it and everything I ownded was destroyed May 3rd 1999 by a tornado, with me in the house.

I purchased the current house on May 28, 1999. The new house is 2500sqf and it was 200K when I bought it. I have been told that it is worth 350K now.
