A buddy at work pulled this out of the local paper for me. (dont mind the highlighting, he did that for me). Anyway, dont have a scanner so these pics were the best I could do. Kinda interesting, I learned something Oh, and sorry about the last two lines of the paper, didnt mean to cut em off. The left side reads "the overall amount of plastic" and the right reads, "that also degrade PVC".

This is exactly what I was explaining to someone last week, but I forgot the exact term. Outgassing plus smoke, plus "essence of dog" (eau de doggie?) plus human filth on a windshield equals a real pain in the @$$. A little alcohol (previously, mineral spirits) in my window cleaner helps. I wonder if there could be something added to vinyl paint to act as a barrier and reduce the effects of outgassing?



Harder plastics, such as in the newer Ford Explorers/Expeditions will have less of an outgassing effect, it seems, but without a good paint or coating, or something underneath to damp the resonances, will look and feel cheap.

I've always been concerned these would interfer with passenger-side airbag deployment.

Dash mats won't prevent VOC outgassing because it comes from all materials within the car. You may as well cover the entire interior with some form of plastic then.



It comes from adhesives and other materials that the interior is made of so car makers are looking at ways to reduce these VOC's which is a good idea......the only problem I see is this....how will a "new" car now smell??

^ Yeah on my Suby it doesn't come out of the dash it comes out of the front pillars which have a porous cloth material.

This is also why if you are able to park in a secured garage, its a good idea to crack your windows to reduce the amount of outgassing that gets "stuck" in the car.

I have been able to minimize this haze/fog by cracking all 4 windows open by about 2" and using a reflective windshield screen - the type used to keep the sun out when parked.

It definitely helped. I noticed that I could wait longer time before windshield needed to be cleaned.

You don't want to stop outgassing or you take a chance with the surface bubbling. I manufacture forklifts and the cast lead counterweights outgas. We have the manufacturer date the counterweights so we know how many days they have had to outgas before we paint them. Less than 30 means that the paint stands a good likelyhood of bubbling.
