Armstrong floor tile in the garage?

NICE WORK!! Did you have any issues with low spots on the floor before applying the tiles?? If so, how did you level floor?? Also, what did you do near the door end of the garage edge to prevent anything for gettiing under the end tile??

Inspiring work, I must say. So far I think route will best suite my needs.

Thanks for all the kudos...it makes all the work that much more rewarding!

The floor didn't have a problem with low spots to any great degree. It is a garage slab, though, so it isn't perfect..but it's not bad either. I had some low spots at the hoist pads which I brought up to slab grade with self levelling mortar.. available at Home Depot in the ceramic floor tile section.

I stopped the tiles about 7 inches from the overhead doors...then laid a flat tile- the main tiles have a pebble grain - from that edge to the end of the slab. So those are the tiles the run under the garage door. I used a PVC edging sold for those 4 x 8 panels that you can use in the bathroom to finish the tile edge. It's white..but looks ok and has held up so far to traffic. The tiles slip into this edge piece. I could have used a construction adhesive under the edge strip but went with the floor adhesive instead. I've run a silicone caulk bead to seal the bottom of the edge strip to the slab. I also have run a caulk bead along both sides of the floor between the last tiles and the stem wall to keep run-off out from under the tiles.

I would use base moulding but the stem wall is not very clean and would require days of work to make smooth enough for base moulding.

I put the down the Armstrong tiles in Sep 2003. Still going strong, looks great, and easy to clean. No problems with spills Including brake fluid and gas), etc. I checked with Armstrong first and they recommended the peel and stick. They said it would hold up better than gluing. 13 months later and no complaints.

Peel and Eat Tiles? Wow! I never would have thought that they'd stay down. My dad layed those in his kitchen and within a year they'd raise a racket when you walked on them...and he followed surface prep to a T.

Good for you....I presume you're enjoying a finished floor as much as I am...can't believe how much nicer it is than the bare slab...warmer, easier to clean, easier on the feet...

Everyone thought I was crazy when I started...now those folks want to do it to. I have a 77 vette that leaks tranny fluid constantly. No problem - just wipe it up.

Generally, I use a swifter mop to clean it. On occasion, I have taken the water hose to it.

Last month, it started to show a few scratches - I rented a floor buffer, stripped it, and applied a commercial wax. Now it looks better than when I put it down. I think I will do this annually.

Yes...buffing...this job has led me into the world of commercial janitorial supply. Wow...those kids have some neat toys!

I used a commercial sealer - 3 coats - on my tile before use. I found, though, that I get static build-up so next spring when I strip and re-seal I'll use an anti-static sealer.

I just called Tarkett in Texas at 800-366-2689, got the runaround, called back to get Superior Products in Maryland 1-410-799-1000, my state's distributor. I called them to reach a carpet store right down the street from my house! Their voice mail box is full, but I'll be contacting them to find a price on the Azrock vinyl tile.

I did find it listed at one on line outlet for $3 something / foot.

I don't think I'd have paid that much, but I am liking the floor - its non-slip texture really works.

hello all,

im new here. got this site from the corvette forum.

i have used the armstrong VCT in my garage, and LOVE IT!!!!

heres a few pics of it when i 1st did it.

i have since stripped it, sealed it and put 4 coats of wax on it and it looks great!

i used the behr epoxy on the floor when the house was 1st built and it didnt hold up worth a crap. it was pulling up all over ther place.

for the money, you cant beat the armstrong vct. i think i did my 20x20 garage for about 350 bucks buying a trowel and knee pads and a cutter for the tiles.

I ordered 506 sq. ft. of the AZRock from the carpet store down the street. The tiles they had in their warehouse were selling for only $0.15 each, but my wife hated the off-white color. She and her cousins looked at a sample board and selected a dark grey color which will border my garage floor, and a lighter grey tile which will fill in the rest of the floor. They chose the colors to match the Coleman cabinets that I bought from Lowes.

I've tried to upload pics to my gallery of the cabinets and of my garage before the renovation, but haven't had success at 56k. I'll keep trying.

Anyway, the tiles were full price at $1.00 per tile. ($45 per box of 45.) I asked the store to install the tile for me. So I paid $70 for two buckets of adhesive, and they charge $1.00 per sq. ft. to install. So my bill, while high at $1136 including tax, will be worth it to me and my wife when the job is complete. The tiles arrive at the store tomorrow, and the store will install on Friday. I'll take pics and try to upload here.

For another $100, the store will hire a contractor to buff a high gloss shine onto the floor for me. Although shiny, the floor will still be slip-proof, they say.

Then my cousins will install my cabinets and move all of my supplies into them. More pics to follow.

Thanks to Peter Crowl for turning me on to AZRock!

$1 / foot for the tiles is a good deal!

I've been living with Azrock for a while now and I really like it.

We've had a couple of snow episodes which have given me the opportunity to get good at cleaning the floor.

Even when wet from run-off the floor isn't slippery as is my friends smooth Armstrong tile floor.

$100 to seal it is fair..you'd spend $40 for sealer alone. All you need to do, though, is wash the floor to remove the temporary sealer that they come with and then spread the final sealer with a lambswool applicator. I bought a heavy string mop (I have a mop bucket) and use that to clean the floor.

It's been great and I'm very happy with it

Funny thing is...I bought 5 Coleman cabinets from Lowes myself :~) They're made by O'Sullivan...not super duty but very nice and very adequate for the purpose...BTW...they sell switch and outlet plates in Grey that pretty much match the cabinets..which of course I bought :nixweiss

Can't wait to see your pics!

Peter

Switch and outlet plates in grey! Don't get my wife started! Heh. She's already decided to paint the garage walls in the grey colors of the Coleman cabinets. Wherever the wall is unfinished, she's going to paint the studs light grey and the background dark grey. LOL!

Last night, my wife's cousins began cleaning the garage floor. Four years of motor oil from my old car was on it, so they poured Simple Green out of a gallon jug onto the worst parts. They let it sit for half an hour, then took a microfibre broom and brushed like crazy. They didn't need to do that much effort, because the Simple Green worked to lift the major stains! However, they left the solution on the floor anyway.

Tonight, they're going to use NOW All Purpose Cleaner by pouring it right over the Simple Green. They'll follow the same procedure as above, then rinse with hot water.

The wife wants the carpet company to also tile our steps leading from the garage to the house (two steps). Time to break out the wallet again...

My garage is starting to look like evil_c5's! (See several posts up) The Azrock floor has been laid, and it looks G-O-O-D GOOD! My cousins have now begun painting the walls and ceiling. They are half done. It's gotten COLD in my neck of the woods, so they complained about working in freezing temps. So, last night I went out and bought 4 of these Holmes heaters from Lowe's (click here) . I was going to buy these DeLonghi heaters (click here) , but a customer told me that the Holmes puts out far more heat than the DeLonghi. He owns one DeL, and 4 Holmes. I also bought 4 power strip surge protectors and a super-heavy-duty extension cord for the freezer. This project is turning into a money pit! Total cost of these items was $266.

I've got pics on Yahoo! but I can't access that site at work (where I'm typing from now). When I get to the home computer (this weekend), I'll post the link to my photo album on Yahoo! which shows the garage renovation in progress to this point.

I've been looking for a good garage floor solution that is cheaper than Race Deck but nicer than epoxy... this seems to be a viable option.

Plus, Tarkett is in Houston - where I live. I wonder what would happen if I drove the truck down there... I at least owe them a phone call to ask where the cheapest place in town would be to by that Azrock.

i need to go get some of those heaters! my garage stays fairly warm. it was 27 degrees outside this morning and the temp in my garage was 50 degrees.

its so nice to have a garage that looks like another room in the house and not a place to keep your lawnmower and camping gear.

I think you've really hit it on the head with that. The floor makes the garage part of the house...and since my garage faces front, having it look like a nice - large - room enhances the whole house.

When I was doing the circles my wife made a comment about it being the garage floor not the Foyer...but it's my foyer isn't it?

Then a friend came by and exclaimed...Wow--you've got cars parked in the Ballroom!

:bounce PETER! I've got some pictures!

Try this link. It shows my progress through last Friday, December 10, 2004. As I progress, I will add more pics to this same link.
