Are you annoyed with the high gas prices?

Its not the cost of gas people should be worried about, in correlation its the cost of goods (consumables like food etc) that are going to keep going up. Grocery bills will kill middle class.

Right. I know trucking rates are going up a lot too - which will lead to price increases for EVERYTHING, simply to make up for the increase in transportation costs. A loaded semi truck gets 5.5mpg on average. At $4.20 / gallon for diesel, that's over 75 cents per mile just to cover fuel. These guys then have wear and tear, insurance, truck payment, and need something for revenue. If diesel hits $5 /gallon, that will put them at about $1 / mile just for fuel.

The alternative is shipping by rail, but you had better not be in a rush to get your goods.

I know people in trucking and a client who owns a business selling truck engines, trans etc, he' s in Atlanta which is basically a trucking hub and its bad. Lot of self employed drivers are out of work as they can't afford the cost of diesel and companies that have W2 truckers are getting killed on cost.

Wait till people are paying 15 bucks for gallon of milk or 20 bucks for a regular loaf of bread. Friggen lemons are $1+ a piece now.

I figure I'll just pay it and move on....nothing we can actually do about it so oh well. I have to fill two caars up which blows too. The Vette is a gas hog with this cam!

My energetics class professor keeps asking still rhetorically, "Why is gas so cheap?"

something to think about...

I was watching something on MSNBC about the gas prices. It seems as though gas prices are rising like crazy yet people still have to buy it. I don't think prices will go down unless a significant change in demand decreases.

You guys have it easy, here in england we are getting raped for fuel !!

Diesel $2.38 per litre (4.5ltre=gallon $10.75)

Leaded $2.21per litre (4.5ltre=gallon $9.94)

Based on a £ x $ exchange rate of 1.99

Hm. It's not really bothering me. I bike a lot.

I think I've filled my car up once since the start of March. :)

Of course, I'm a poor college student so I still know how to stretch a dollar.

You'll see a lot of companies go under as they can't raise prices fast enough to cover transportation costs. I've got an internship at a major bread manufacturer, and distribution is rapidly becoming a cost driver.

Everyone made some big mistakes in the early 90s, moving production to where labor was cheap and not necessarily where the buyers were. No one could have forseen things going as badly as they are right now - and gas has gone up 4x in 10 years, when most facilities have a life cycle of 50+ years.

A lot of this has been coming for a long time - specialization at the plant level made a lot of sense when diesel was 99 cents a gallon, but nowadays it's killing companies to be moving product 1500+ miles between regions, instead of having local production with 150 mile truck runs.

yes..25 mile commute one way. small 4 cyl suzuki car. 34$ to fill up from half. I'd cry if I ever let it go down to Empty. Its freakin ridiculous. Ah I miss the old 1$ a gal days

The Station at the corner of my work is at $3.80 Last night when I came in it was at $3.70 8 freakin hours ago!!!! what gives!!!?!??

Americas oil consumption is based in part because of its size. Compare the US's oil consumption to that of Europe, not individual countries. Not only that, dont compare US prices to Europes prices since Europe has tax on the gas for healthcare, so to those who say they would pay our prices, would you be willing to also pay for your healthcare too?

I agree ! In Europe what would they pay for gas if they paid our taxes. They have health care , better public transporation, and better roads. The roads in the Chicago area are bad , pot holes everywhere.

it costs me $40.50 to fill up my car from "E" the other day and it was $3.75 here I fill up 2 time s a month and dont go any damn places 'cept work and home....it sucks...we need a retro 50's day or something so that everything at the gas stations would cost what it did back then! :)

1.40/L here. I wouldn't mind paying 4.04/gallon...

I think I heard somewhere that the price is set at what the market will bear. The above statements back that up. As well as the fact that a lot of car manufacturers are still in horsepower wars. The US won't really make significant changes to the way we go about things (car pool / buy more fuel efficient cars / walk and bike more / just more sacrifices) until the price of gas is 4 - 5 times more than when it was 2 years ago. ($10)

I for one love the sound of a V8 with a Borla exhaust, but at the same time, if you chose to own heavy cars with heavy HP and poor gas mileage you can't complain.

Hybrids are coming in force soon with the domestic automakers, but this 'green'hybrid' movement is really just marketing (a new trim level) and no real results. 25% increase in mileage for big SUVs and pickups? (plus the premium $$$ for the hybrid system) They're really trying to impress us with trucks and SUVs that get 15mpg vs 12. Lame.

But hey, a lot of people are buying into it.

It's funny, my dad (DOT retiree) remembers back in the 60's when VW approached the US gov't with a diesel car that got 100mpg. He said the bigwigs above his head all scoffed at the idea and let it die with the prototype.

Call it a conspriacy theory, but there must be a select few higher forces at play who mastermind keeping oil up and MPGs down.

I just got back from Chicago and ditto on the potholes. I travel there once a month from Southern California. The airfares have really gone up! I guess I'll have to start eating "Fancy Feast" or braise the cat with some sauerkraut.

Going from 12 to 15 saves more gas in a year than going from 25 to 35 mpg. It sounds sort of counter-logical, but 12 -> 15 is better than 50->100, too.
