Are Paper Towels OK to clean windows or should I use MFs?

I accidentally created a few deep scratches on the tinted film while wiping dry the window using paper towel. From that day onwards, I never use paper towel to wipe dry, use a dry MF instead. Problem solved.

I've used the yellow glass towels from Viper (from CMA) and love them. No streaking! Paper always seems to lint no matter how good the quality.

Will Paper Towels scratch windows? THANKS.

As Zey found out, paper towels can scratch window tint films. If you don't have that issue, and if you don't have a problem with lint, then *I* don't see any reason NOT use stick with regular old paper towels.

*I* use MFs and Griot's polypro window towels, but IMO it's not like paper is gonna scratch glass. Glass, even automotive glass (with all the soft synthetic stuff in it these days), is pretty hard. Paper towels are, well, just paper. People like cleaning glass with newspaper because the ink is mildly abrasive.

I like to use newspaper. Never had a problem with it. Seems paper towels have a some thing in them that make windows streak.

I see lint when I use MF's, but not paper towel. Doesn't matter if they are turtle wax or pak shak. I'm guessing I use too much pressure, but can't remember if I tried that last fall or not.

randy98mtu,

I got lint using MF's, too. I used the WalMart and Turtle Wax ones (the WalMart are especially bad about lint). I've now gotten a gold plush one from Exceldetail.com, and no longer have a lint problem. And it is excellent for all other aspects of detailing, too. I was so impressed, I ordered some more.

I stumbled across some "glass only" type made by Black Magic (they're blue). These do well, with no lint.

A tip I learned as a child from my Mom is to use old white bed sheets for glass. Cut them to whatever size you feel comfortable with, and clean glass streak and lint free. When done, they can be laundered with anything else, just no fabric softener.

Hope this helps.

Most paper towels contain binders to keep the paper particles together which will leave a residue on the glass. I use MFs or the blue, window washing towels from Griot's. They work great, although expensive. They remind me of the old towels they used to use at the gas stations when the attendant washed the windows. (yes, I am that old) :o

Hey, I missed that back in '04!

I still think the Griot's polypro window towels are great.

Similar to, but a little diff from the old gas station towels, which often had a little...oh what was it?!?...maybe silica...in them, which could scratch today's "it's-not-really-all-glass" autoglass the same way old-school wipes for glasses will scratch today's plastic lenses.

My only issues with MFs is that they inevitably start linting for me. I simply *love* how good MFs-for-glass work otherwise.
