applying Optimum Spray Wax

I did a rinseless wash today with ONR and I thought I'll apply some the Optimum Spray Wax after. This is my second time using this and I think I'm doing it wrong.

I spray a panel and use a MF towel to work it in but it seems like it's really hard to work in and I feel like I'm scratching the paint with the MF towels. It's not smooth but feels sticky when moving across the paint like I'm dragging it. I hope I'm not instilling scratches on the paint. It just doesn't feel right.

Am I doing it wrong?
What and how are you guys applying these spray wax?

I've got two coats of Collinite 845 that I applied three weeks ago.

A good MF towel should glide easily across a clean paint surface. Perhaps you are experiencing overspray or some other contaminants on the surface.

Otherwise try spritzing a bit of the OCW on the MF before spritzing the panel. I have no issues with this method.

Has the vehicle had a session with the clay bar? Maybe like stated above there are contaminants on the paint still.

A few questions. What do you mean by working in? I've never worked in OCW - just spread with an MF, then flip and do a final wipe. Also, were you using a long-nap MF? I've found that long-nap MFs can drag when used with spray waxes (including OCW) - I prefer to use a medium- to short-nap towel.

You may be using too much product, it doesn't take a whole lot to do a panel. When you initially start wiping the surface it may feel like it's dragging a bit. Once you flip the towel, or use another, you'll feel the difference as it begins to glide over the surface.

Two questions:

1. What towel are you using?
2. What's the temperature outside?

If it's too cold, the product will be difficult to spread/buff. If your towel is too plush, the product will be difficult to spread/buff.

I was using these two towels I bought from Chemical guys

microfiber, microfiber towels, car care products, auto detailing, house cleaning, micro-restore, micro restore, df towels, microfiber

SASQUATCH MAXIMUS HAIR RAISING MAXIMUM STASH MICROFIBERS  (1 Pack)

I may have been using too much product. I was doing the hood which got painted in July of this year and clayed like 7 weeks ago followed with two coats of Collinite 845.

I was also applying the spray on wax at 46 degrees. Not sure if that makes a huge difference

I tried working it in like the instructions says at the back of the bottle

I've found that a towel with a medium nap works best. Have one for spreading the product and a second one for buffing. Super thick towels don't work too well with spray waxes.

The temperature sounds like the main reason the product was grabby. Ideally you want to use it in temperatures above 60 degrees and like others have said, use it sparingly.

Yeah I suspect it was the temperature or me using too much product or both. The back of the bottle even tells me to not use it under 55 degrees lol.

But I still remember it being grabby when it was warmer outside 3-4 weeks ago a day after I apply Collinite 845

See! This is why we have experts like AutopiaTech :rockon My answer was way too simple and presumptuous. Come to think of it, I had the same experience applying/buffing wax with a very plushy towel. Good advice AT :bigups

listen to fog horn leg horn

been guilty of using too much product myself

Thanks everyone. I will try that whenever the next time I get the chance to after a rinseless wash. Not sure when that will be though since the other day was the only exception that it was 8-16 degrees here in canada
