Apple's iPad

Big Leegr

Swirls?!?! NNOOOOOOO!!!!!
So, I was recently perusing eBay and noticed that the new iPad is listed quite frequently there. All "New in Box" and such.

What I don't get is, there are listings for $800-$1,000+ (plus huge shipping fees) for basic 16G WiFi models that have a MSRP of $499 with free shipping direct from Apple USA.
****And there are actual bids for these pads!!

The only thing I can think of is that the bidding is coming from international customers that can't get an iPad in their country. Why else would someone pay twice the SRP for them? :hmmm:

That is all.

I'm all for technology and neat things. I have a couple of iPhones and various models and frankensteins of iPods. With that said, I can't understand why anyone would want an iPad. It is so unappealing and not understood by me. Why anyone would take an iPad over a regular laptop is beyond me. Maybe there's something I am missing, but I am usually one of the first-adopters when it comes to new and interesting things. Fill me in....

ditto

An iPad would be the ideal tool with a 3G card for me to go to dealer auctions and bid on stuff. Run the Carfaxes from right there. Check book values and current classified listings. Look up common problems on the car. See if there's outstanding recalls on it. And then I can shoot a few pictures of it, plug in the camera/jump drive/SD card, and upload that and a description straight to my website via ftp.

THAT is where the iPad has it over a conventional laptop/tablet. I wouldn't want one until I start spending a day EVERY WEEK at auction, but once I have one I'll think of dozens more ways to make used car lot work more efficient.

First off, I love my iBook, so don't think I hate Apple.
That said, I'm having trouble understanding how this is soooo much better than netbooks or other tablets.
You (occupant) mention connecting a camera to it to download pictures at auctions. How is that any different than if you had a netbook or tablet (both of which usually have at least 1 USB port built in, whereas the iPad requires the purchase of an additional piece of hardware to allow a USB connection to your camera)?
You also mention linking up to the net while at an auction. You can get those (USB) internet sticks or (depending on your plan) can tether your netbook/tablet to your cell phone to get the net "on the go."
In fact, from what you've mentioned, a person could do most of this via a smart phone with a built in camera (albeit on a very small screen/keyboard)

Again, I'm not saying that it won't sell (already proof of sales/pre-orders exceeding expectation), but I think the iPad is more of another style of e-reader/net surfer/entertainment device than a "killer" of other platforms.

But, time will tell, I guess. All I know is that I won't be one of the first adopters.

The main problem with that is that (most likely) the iPad will be tied to AT&T service {yes, I know there's ways around that}. This generally means the poor reception and very small pockets of 3G service.

On a semi-related topic, it kills me to see the AT&T commercials boasting about how fast their 3G network is, comparing it against Verizon's map showing about a tenfold larger covered area of 3G. Hey, AT&T - fast don't mean squat if you can't get it.... I'm around 50 miles outside the largest city in the state, and can't get 3G coverage. Seriously?

So... a bit of a bump here. Who has bought one? Is it everything you've dreamed of and more?

I don't have one but have played around with one for some time. They are way cool IMO. I have a lap Top so buying one wouldn't do me any good, but if I was in the market for a new portable PC. The iPad would be a good choice.

I can also say that Apple has graphics and email virus control down better than anyone else.

Why are they so popular, its about the application. Meaning what they use them for. Portability and ease of use, just like Net Books.

Interesting to read my post from last year regarding this. My wife got one through her employer, and outside of playing a couple of games and downloading interactive children's books for my little boy, we don't really use it. I think we might use it to look at Facebook, and I did use it a couple times at the kitchen table to look up a website. Other than that, I still think I feel the same way about it now as I did back then.

I love my DroidX. I love my Verizon service. I am so glad that I finally dumped AT&T, and can't believe it took me so long to do so.

Verizon is great and I plan on sticking with them. Looking forward to the Droid Bionic. I was about to pull the trigger on the X, but a friend works for verizon and told me to hold off for a bit since the 4G stuff will continue to be released. (that and my upgrade isn't for another 2 months:wall)

Personally I've been considering getting one simply because it's lighter and more portable than a laptop, and with the tablet capability easy to jot notes on and have them converted to typed text with ease. Plus they can be utilized for so many other cool things that a traditional laptop (I already have/use a macbook) can't accomplish.

That said, the price is quite steep and really, I don't know if it's worth what they want for it. At this point I'm waiting to see what improvements are made on the 2G iPad because it will be either enough better that I'll want one, or the price on the original iPad will drop enough that it will be worth it for me to pick one up.

JP I've been with AT&T for years with no issues. I think its a lot to do with the area that you live in and their coverage of that area.

I had been with them for years too. And you're right - if you live in one of the three areas in the country where they had 3G coverage, you were golden. :D

Their commercials kill me - the one with people getting late texts. That's EXACTLY the kind of thing that made me leave. I'd get texts two days after they were sent. Voicemails weeks later showing up as new messages. Just terrible phone service, and the customer service was not much better. They did give me a $25 credit once, so at least they did that.

verizon is the most exspensive .but totaly worth it ..

Verizon customer service is absolutely atrocious in my experience... wouldn't give them a dime of my money if they were the last cell provider out there.

AT&T on the other hand has been great. I've got my iPhone, POTS line, and U-verse phone/TV/internet all through them and they've been great to deal with so far. :rockon

Having both an iPhone and a laptop, I can't imagine what I'd ever need an iPad for. Friends have them and I've played around with one, but I just don't see the need for it?

im new to verizon so if thats true that stinks . ive had teen mobil they were terrible.i had sprint they were ok but if u were a day late on ur bill they cut u off. verizon is the best signal for my area.. owell

I have a blackberry and also carry my laptop on the road. When the ipad first came out I thought what a useless piece. After stopping at AT&T a while back to discuss a U-verse install I had the opportunity to play with one for about 45mins. It got me thinking. All I do when I travel is surf the net, post on forums ,email and watch movies while waiting on freight. The I pad did all of these very well. Now If I can just convince the wife I need one.Not crazy about leaving Sprint for AT&T (would rather try Verizion from all the good I hear).Anyone think the ipad will eventally come to Verizion like the iphone has ?
