Anything other than Scratch X?

I have some scratches on my car that were there when I bought it about 2 months ago. I have tried scratch x but they will not remove them. I have never liked scratch x and have never had any good results with it. I know for fact that 80% of them are not down to the primer. Only 1 or 2 are deep but very small. I need some suggestions on what I can use to remove them. I have 3m heavy duty rubbing compound but am afraid to use it because its a beautiful black car and I dont want to not be able to get the marring and dullness out after using it. PLEASE SOME SUGGESTIONS PEOPLE!!!!!

If the scratches are anything that you can feel with your nail then you can put the polishes down. It doesn't have to go through to the primer to need touch up. If it went through the clear coat then it needs touch up. If scratchX isn't doing the trick, then it may be that they need to be painted in order to be repaired. ScratchX is pretty abrasive stuff. You won't find much out there that can do what ScratchX can't.

but how do I apply touch up paint without it looking like crap? Can I put it on the scratch and then try to put the scratch ex over it in hopes of if removing all the paint except from where it actually went in the scratch? I know some scratches are minor.

Would you try the scratch ex on the pc with a white or even a orange pad? I need to get one of those small 3" pad TOTL sells?

Anyone got one I can loan out for a couple days :-p

with my thought process, it seems that doing it that way would just spread paint all over the place. touch up paint will never look great. but it will help in reducing rust. the only other thing that i can think of is the turtlewax color match polish. it comes with a wax stick. i only use that as a last resort though.

From what I remember I don't think that it was made to be used with a PC.

I think ScratchX is to be used by hand only. I think it gums up the pad and doesn't break down correctly or something when used with a machine.

You can get very good results with touch up paint and the Langka kit from Dwayne. Just follow the directions on the Langka kit. With a little patience, you can fix nicks and chips with very good results. I am not quite sure about long scratches, but I fixed a couple of scratches (short ones) on my dad's truck using the Mother's Langka and they turned out very good. Hope you get it worked out.

Another vote for the Langka. I had a buddy that got a scrath on his new Mustang and it worked out great. Definately a great alternative.

If you use the Langka kit, make sure you get the right type of touch-up paint. From what I understand, the Duplicolor "rollerball/pen" thing has a different type of paint than the kit is intended to be used on.

As to the ScratchX, did you use it repeatedly? If you used it only 1,2, or even 3 times, you probably didn't give it enough tries. It uses diminishing abrasives, which (surpisingly) diminish, or break down as it is rubbed in, so the more you rub the application, the finer it gets. This allows for a better finish, but continuing the rubbing won't get rid of the scratches. ScratchX is most abrasive at the start, so repeated applications of "fresh" ScratchX will work faster than a few rubbed in well.

today I decided to try the 3m heavy cut rubbing compound and of course it helped some what but now you can see where it was applied. I put a coat of VM over it hoping it would bring back the oirginal shine but no luck. What do I need to do to get the dullness out and back to the wet look it had before. Thanks

You need to use a finer polish. Some examples are 3M's Machine Polish, Meg's 80 and PB's SSR 2 or 1, among others.

Look for a mild polish that lists waxing as the following step. Diminishing abrasives are a good thing to look for too.

hey maybe scratchx can remove the left over haze from the 3m compound...

the left over haze is just outer beauty marks... not like it was burned in or anything

thanks guys I will try the scratch x over the hazing. I also have ssr 2.5 and some swirl mark remover for dark cars and some dacp. I need to get some terry hand pad because all I have left are the foam one.
