Anyone using a convection heater in their garage?

I've been trying to find something also. But I'm a little wary of the fumes given off by a gas heating system in an enclosed space like my garage. On the other hand a quality electric heater seems to be a few hundred bucks. I would be interested to see what some of you guys use, if anything.

I just keep the walk through door open a little bit and once the garage is heated I turn off the heater and close the door.

A friend of mine has something like that, uses it in his garage. And I used something like the "Little Buddy" shown on that website last weekend when our power was off. I borrowed his a few years ago when our power was out for days and I found the exhaust fumes pretty significant in an enclosed space, so I guess it'll depend on how big the shop is, how tightly sealed, and how long you run the thing.

I'd definitely get a carbon monoxide detector just to be on the safe side. I have "ventless" gas heaters in my shop and even with all the airspace I have to open up a door/window from time to time to keep things safe. My Co detector hasn't gone off yet, but I still like breathing fresh air so I open things up *before* it goes off.

I have an electric heater I got at Home Depot, and it is great. It's quiet, and it's on all the time (except for the summer). You can set it for whatever temp you want. I did have to wire 220 for it, but it was well worth it.

Has anyone seen those new "Eden Pure" space heaters they have been advertising for home use? Supposed to be completely safe, wont reduce oxygen levels, produce no fumes and cannot start a fire. They have a unit that heats like 1200' for around $350. I was wondering how one of thesse might work?

A friend from Ohio was talking about those a month or so ago..... they have one he uses in the house and was thinking about buying another one. He seemed very pleased with it and while he hasn't used one in his garage, he said he didn't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Now, with that being said I'd suggest doing a search and see what you find. The following thread has some info you might find interesting.

Heater

After reading a bit about those heaters I think I'm going to look a little closer at some of the propane heaters. My garage is attached and insulated so I only need to raise the heat a little to make it more comfortable to work in.

I use a propane 50K BTU forced air heater.

I hate it.

It sucks down propane like its water.

Plus it has a heat sensor. So if it gets to warm it shuts itself off. Except its set at like 45F-50F. My garage cools back down to 30F in like 10 minutes. So im constantly restarting it.

Nope, not yet. I just bought the house in august and didnt have time to insulate before winter. Next winter it will be.

Yeah the insulation will make a huge difference. I use a 30K BTU Reddy Heater for about 45 minutes and turn it off. It stays pretty warm for quite a while.

Looks like a nice heater Danase.

just checked on Amazon.. not a bad price either

Yeah, I like the price too. I also like the fact that I don't have to run electricity to it. The less cords I have laying around the better.

A couple of comments I'll share on this. I have gone thru a couple of the kerosene heaters. The newest one, 70k BTU, is much cleaner than previous models...don't know why, but there's very little odor from it. I need something substantial (forced air) to heat my garage as I have high ceilings...they're probably 14'. I can get the temp up high enough and not burn an insane amount of fuel and it doesn't take too long. I make it a point to buy very clean kerosene from the hardware store in gallon or 2.5 gallon jugs. This stuff is quite a bit cleaner than the stuff you'd buy at the gas station and has to be partially resposible for the low odor. If you really want to great crazy, XOM produces a synthetic kero you can find every once-in-a-while at HD, but it's around $8/gallon. There is no odor from this syn product. I only burn a few gallons of kero (probably less than 5) during the entire season.

I've also got a radiant heater that clamps on top of your BBQ tank bottle. While it kicks out a tremendous amount of heat, it's only useful if you're standing at your work bench, for example. It's of little to no value if you're moving around your car.

You can also buy the electric radiant heaters and mount them on a wall and focus it at the front of the car while doing an oil change, etc. Problem is, the throw isn't very far so you've got to be fairly close to it to have any effect. I am thinking about picking one of these up to avoid using the kero heater at all unless I am detailing. I don't like the noise from it and I understand breathing the fumes + CO isn't great for one's health.

Stay warm!

Yeah, I'll echo what Accumulator sez. I also have a CO detector in the garage, haven't ever seen it go off with the heater. I also pre-heat the kero heater 'til it's glowing red hot with garage doors open. This permits the stong fumes to escape as the unit comes up to temp.

If I can't have a real, exterior vented gas heater, I much prefer the ceiling mounted infra-red heaters for a couple of resons:

1) They heat things, not air. Me and my car are things.

2) No open flame. I do a lot of mechanical work in the garage, too, and am always concerned about fumes.

3) Ceiling mounted. They stay out of the way of cords, toys, pets, etc. And most volatile fumes are heavier than air (see #2 above)

Just my 2cents

I use a Cozy wall mounted unit. Had it for 4 years. Always work in a closed garage. No vent needed. It heats my double garage to 80 degrees in sub zero weather no problem.

Well, I ended up getting a convection heater from Lowe's. Let me say that this thing is WAY better than my torpedo style heater. It heats the garage SUPER fast. The fumes seem to be a little more but I just kit the heater one, leave the garage door or walk through door cracked, and let it warm up for a few minutes before going in and working. You are not supposed to leave them unattended but i am bad and do for a few. An easy fix would be to put in an exhaust fan above the heater. Anyway, this this only runs on propane so no electrical is needed which means no more tripping over the electrical cord. It is also super quiet compared to the torpedo. You don't even know it is on.
