Anyone think Collinite just isn't "pretty" enough for a LSP?

OK, I don't mean to keep repeating it, but this might not be a bad place given the topic of the thread.

I prepped my pal's '60 Jag MKII for last year's concours season (and it's still nice enough that I didn't have to redo it this year :D ). It was repainted with b/c during its restoration and my goal was to make it look "period correct" as much as looking "Autopian"; I didn't want it to look, as I explained it to him, "like a new Toyota" lest the Jag nuts score it badly for looking "wrong"; some of those judges are mighty picky and IMO the b/c paint isn't quite how it's supposed to look.

I corrected it with M105 (and man did it need it! Started with harsh wool pads..), finished with M205, and *did not* burnish it lest it look "too reflective" for what it's supposed to be. I then did Autoglym SRP and LSPed with 476S. Everybody (including the owner) was knocked out, said it looked better than when it was just restored (Accumulator pats self on back).

At its first showing (Stan Hywett Hall Father's Day show in Akron, OH), it won its class and people were oohing and aahing about it. A "detailing expert" (scare-quotes intentional ;) ) asked what wax it had, but my pal couldn't remember. So the "expert" said "well, it must be DodoJuice; I use that and *nothing* else looks quite like it!" Everybody looking at the car was like "yeah, that's some kind of special wax all right!" and here it was just good ol' $15 Collinite :chuckle:

Thanks for posting that. Great story!

Funny how the "detailing expert" put so much emphasis on the LSP instead of asking about the prep.

Exactly my thoughts. Gotta say though, the owner *did* realize it wasn't just some special wax and was asking the right questions. And he and his wife were nicely appreciative.

Great example.

In other areas of interests (audio, photography etc), there is always this "premium branding effect".

When they see a very cheap car's paintwork that looks good, they'll never think of super premium brands.

But when they see a fantastically gleaming Ferrari or Aston, they'll think of the super high-end brands.

LOL....that's Consumer Behaviour!! LOL.

There's a great book about such stuff called Predictably Irrational. I found it almost scary, how so many people think!

Predictably stupid would be more accurate.

90% of the content on this forum is product stupidity.

It's the sad truth. Far too much emphasis on products. People here seem to think detailing products are something to collect. The products are just tools not collectibles.

Without a whole lot of products to choose from, I couldn't have achieved exactly what I was going for on that particular car (ditto for my own Jag and some other vehicles I can think of).

I'm on the other end of that. I can accomplish what I want on any vehicle with just a few products now.

The massive product collections I've seen on here are ridiculous and unnecessary. They used to be good for a laugh but they aren't even good for that anymore.

When I have used 476S, after my final wipe I am always disappointed with the look on my car. It seems to be so plain and nothing to brag about. But 24-48 hours later the "look" shows up. The gloss and shine shows up out of nowhere. I always have guessed that it must take that long to cure and clear out, but that is only a guess. Anyway, I have it on one of my cars right now and I am quite happy with the way it looks (after the first 48 hours). Like all polish and wax, you will only know if you like it after you use it.
