Anyone melted a backing plate?

Just finished up a job on an Audi the other day and went to pull off my Hydrotech pad and half the freaking backing plate was melted to the pad. Brand new pad! Anyway. Need some suggestions on new 6" plate for my da. Anyone had this happen before?

Were you using the thin Hydro- tech pads? Did you have the small spacer installed?

I used to use the thin Hydrotech pads and they failed very quickly...middle of the velcro would heat up and come apart and cause the pad to "flap" around and eventually blow up. I moved to the thicker ones and although they last longer, they still fail far to soon for a pad. I'll replace Hydrotech when I find a pad that finishes down as well as they do (Cyan 5.5").

Here's a couple pics of my recent failure:

All of a sudden I felt my pad wobbling and immediatley removed it from the car. If I'd waited any longer chances are it would have flown off and caused some severe surface damage.

^ DAMN ... for that area around the bolt to rip away like that, it leads me to believe that the pad was grabbing the surface too much along with a powerful polisher? It basically spun itself out of it's molding

Zero problems with my LC BP, my CG BO ripped after 2 details. My new CG BP has lasted 4 details so far I just do not put as much pressure on it as I do with my LC BP

What brand of BP was that? I've got an LC BP with the rivets around the center, and I wonder if those will hold up better or not.

I am amazed. I tend to prefer the rotary but force myself to use a DA to be a little more efficent on certain jobs.

That said, I beat the CRAP out of all my DAs and their backing plates and in many years have no melted a single pad or plate. We stock and use a bunch of different plates as well so part of this is literally kicking the daylights out of them on various DA setups and still haven't had any issues whatsoever.

Maybe guys are being too easy on them :D? (I kid)

I melted the center out of my Meg bp the other day, speed 6 does get a little toasty. I picked up a cheap one at sherwin's, it is a little stiffer and I may have had to do some velcro shaving along the outer edge (so it wouldnt eat my Meg pads) but it works well.... Who likes the lc backing plate for there rotary? -> I need to pick up a 5" or 6" soon..

Just today my original Porter Cable velcro backing plate split in two. The front of the plate separated from the back. The stiff foam in the middle just crumbled. Odd.

Both were LC. My 6 inch LC has rivets, but not on the 5 inch? That probably would make a huge difference. Need to look into this.

It finally happened, this was with a PC too! Frig, half way through my polish and this happened!!!! Luckily i was on the door panel and it just shot off down the side of the vehicle. Does LC have any sort of warranty? What are some other backing plates you guys recommend? I may just order a few off 3D because I've had amazing service with them!
