My vision was somewhere between -8 and -8.5 with a slight astigmatism in both eyes. I had PRK/ASA (advanced surface ablation) performed last October. My vision is 20/15L and 20/25R with no astigmatism. I had dry eyes for a bit but that has dissipated over time.
PRK is basically LASIK without the flap. They scrape away the epitheleal layer and reshape the top of the cornea instead of cutting into the middle of the cornea and reshaping towards the middle. LASIK is quicker healing but PRK can be used for more extensive reshaping (worse vision).
When looking for a doctor, I started talking to coworkers, friends and family. I narrowed it down to 3 choices and went for a consult with each one. Two recommended LASIK and one recommended PRK. The two recommending LASIK admitted they weren't as comfortable with PRK. The one recommending PRK also handled testing for the LASIK machine manufacturers. The prices from all of them were pretty much. The reasoning behind the PRK made sense. It has a longer heal time but was better suited for my level of correction.
I would definitely locate a doctor by recommendation, disregard the cost (difficult, but you are talking about your vision and would hate yourself if something happened and you felt a little money would have made the difference) and find a doctor you are comfortable with.
