Anyone concerned about the future of detailing products? (flame city)

As someone who was a typical consumer 3 years ago, I will attest that NozeBleedSpeed is absolutely correct. The average consumer has about the same resolve for car care as he/she has for dieting, or riding an exercise bike.

MPPP has been on the retail shelves for a long time now. It is among the best of pro products out there. Hell ,it was Megs 'last' miracle product. S100 is a consumer product thats available everywhere that you find a Harley dealer.

I would hardly consider S100 to be a consumer product.

BTW, I've checked HD dealerships in several cities in my state and surrounding states and haven't found S100. I know several other autopians that order S100 online because their local HD dealer doesn't carry it.

As far as that goes I've yet to find MPPP or MPPC on a retail shelf.

Why is it so far fetched to think that Meguiars couldn't offer a consumer product to rival or outperform enthusiast’s products on the market now?

Again, I'm not proposing that NXT or it predecessor will hinder professional detailers in anyway. But, they may seriously impact the enthusiast’s product markets of like kind, e.g. waxes/sealants.

As has already been posted, off the shelf products are no match for the professional stuff. The average joe's out there think that meguiars/mothers and armor all are the best and don't mind paying for it.

Look at clay bars. In australia at least, a few years ago they were not available in retail stores, now they are selling like mad for big bucks and the majority if not all pro detailers stopped using them quite some time ago and now use products like Acidet and Malco Pro Fallout Gel.

I noticed a few months ago that there are off the shelf products with teflon in them now. I bet if it's in there its a damn tiny percentage.

Meguiars and Mothers make products that most of us don't need and they deliberately market them in retail stores and no wholesaler or pro product distributor stocks them.

Why use trim detailer when baby oil, saddle soap and pro tire dressings will do the job.

The pro's have nothing to worry about.

. If Klasse was available at Wal-Mart, my customers would still be parking their cars where I could get to them to clean them. The only impact that it would have is, that I wouldn't have to order Klasse online. I could just stop at the Wal-Mart for the Twins on my way to my detail appointment.

NozeBleedSpeed,

This is closer to my point. Right now it sounds very probable that NXT will give most enthusiasts waxes/sealants a run for the money. "What if" to complement NXT, Meg's released NXT II, an AIO product that was very competitive with Klasse for 1/2 the price?

If you could run down to Wally World and pick up NXT and the fictitous NXT II who would order P21s, PB's, Clearkote, Klasse, etc ...? I don't think this scenario is that far fetched.

Of course, the idea that you could pick up one or two consumer products that would replace the whole Meg's professional line would be a reach at this time.

Last year at this time before most of us heard of NXT, if a non-autopian would have asked, "can't you run down to Wally World and spend $15 and get a wax/sealant as good as the stuff autopians use?" it would have invoked a hardy chuckle.

This year, well ... we'll see

He will wash the car with all "new" old T-shirts and follow the very indepth directions on each and every label.....pretty closely.

After spending 3 hours removing the half inch thick layer of NXT(because if a little is good, a whole bunch is better), he will stand back and admire his own work, looking past the swirls he just induced while washing with an old pair of tighty whiteys, and thinking 'that should do it until next spring'. 12 months later he will still be washing the car every 2 weeks but he wont seem to ever find the time to use that bottle of NXT again because it took 8 hours to do the car last time and 6 months for the stuff he got in the trim to finally wear off.

Year 2, the dusty bottle of NXT will be sitting on a shelf next to the same oil filter he bought back when the car was brand new, still 2/3rds full, with crusty dried residue leading from the cap down one side of the bottle from its one and only use.

So you've met my father-in-law then? lol :D

You are worrying over nothing!

Look at the array of products that are out there now.

Look at the vehicles on the roads.

How many of them can be called "autopian"?

Don't worry!

Part Deux...

How many people don't have the time to properly detail their vehicles?

How many of these people hire people like us to do it for them?

don't worry!

You seem genuinely concerned abouth this. That being the case think about this. Manufacturers that create composite body panels with the colors molded into the panel. 10 times more durable than the best clear coats of today. That should keep you up at night. :D

OK, imagine a car with composite body panels that have the color all the way through. They may be more durable than paint, but they will still be subject to surface scratches, and pollution fallout, sun fade etc that 'regular' paint is.

We all know the "new" painting system (clear coats) let paints 'shine' longer than the old single stage paints, BUT without routine, in depth care, then get just as bad as the old paints did AND are harder to bring back to pristine (for the "regular consumer" type).

So figure the new "full color" body panels will never really fade (if they do, just rub 'through' until you get to good color again). How is that different from Joe Consumer getting a can of Turtle Wax and rubbing a swirled, scratched and nasty (but shiney) finish on his car like he does now? It will STILL look nasty and need a "real" detailing to make it how it should be, and that means there will still be a need for the pro detailers.

Until they blend paint with some Unobtainium alloy that retains it's color, never scratches, dulls fades, chips etc, there will always need detailers (even during the horse and buggy days, before paint, many owners had SOMEONE ELSE to "detail" the horse... bathe & rub down).

I think the EPA is a bigger danger to detailers than the automakers

Well, I’ll bow to the general consensus of this forum.:bow

Thanks for not turning your flamethrowers up too high!;)

I was just thinking out loud. I’m truly not going to let this keep me up at night. Presently, I’m more concerned about the newly acquired bullet holes in my truck:angry (see thread entitled, “Living in the big city can be hazardous to your detailing efforts).

Yeah pugoman. I have met him:D . I know I keep referring to American car owners but car owners are the same everywhere.

I was in the Navy and even in the most technically and socially advanced countries that I visited, (read: gotten drunk and raised hell in. I was a sailor) like England and Australia (by your leave pugoman and SVR) the majority of cars were all equally neglected. The biggest difference is that Americans typically buy cars more frequently than others. They say Americans have a love affair with cars but the truth is, most Americans abuse and neglect cars, and most try to trade out as soon as their warranty is up. True enthusiasts that build and own retro-mods like the occasional '67 Mustang or '57 Bellair, do meticulously polish, wax and wrench. They are only a handfull compared to the masses. Most car owners in the U.S., GB , down under and everywhere else, all own car care products. Most never learn how to use them properly and dont care enough to put forth the effort. Life is a beer commercial and they never show a guy drinking a Bud (or a pint) while waxing the car. Everyone wants a show car. They just dont know where they come from.:D

Damn, pardon my digression...

Excuse the hijack NHBFAN.

Yeah NozeBleedSpeed - car owners in the UK have alot to learn when it comes to keeping a car in good condition let alone show car condition! Every weekend I see people in my neighbourhood washing their cars with dirty old sponges and then rubbing a 10 year old chamois leather across their paintwork. It's as if the general public are blind to surface scratches and swirl marks that they inflict upon their paintwork.

I've only been seriously detailing for the last 6 months and already I'm confident enough to be able to provide a detailing service to the general public in my local area - but I just know people over here wouldn't be prepared to spend good money on someone else detailing their car. If you asked someone over hear if they'd like their car detailed, they'd say "what do you mean by detailed?".

Even people that are interested in looking after their car haven't got a clue about proper detailing.

As for the rest of Europe, well don't even get me started! My father-in-law is Italian and you wouldn't believe how neglected his car is. It gets to the stage that my mother-in-law gets so fed up with the state of it, she goes out and hoovers and washes it herself - and that adds to more problems for the paintwork! I won't even bother to offer to help as I know it's a lost cause!

No worries. Most joe turtle wax detailers won't want to pay $15 for NXT. They'll still opt for the 'high end' $7 zymol or the wax as you wash $5 crap.

JMHO.

Bill.

I would for the following reasons:

1. I hate Wal Mart. I hate it, I hate parking around all the crazy shopping cart pushers, the screaming children hurling things all over the place, the lines, the woman arguing in front of me for an hour about a $1 off a $350 TV coupon...I hate Wal Mart (and a lot of other similar stores, Target, K mart..,.come to think of it, I just hate stores. I buy everything online...I bought my car online.

2. I like being able to buy things with just a click of my mouse, and not have to deal with all the hassles. Worrying about if the products will be there or not....PITA.

3. The fun of detailing is trying new things. NXT will get shoved under the bridge just like every new product the instant someone even mentiones the upcoming release of something new.

Wal Mart..........ughhhh Autopia online store or ordering from Steve at Poorboys over email.......ahhhhh! :p

This was just posted in a thread in the University forum about trying to find NXT in a store

Ok, I went to 2 Wal-Marts and one target. All 3 stores wouldn't even go look in the back to see if they had any. Customer service isn't what it used to be.

See, why even bother? ;)

No disparage to anyone who shops at WalMart, I'm just joking around.
