Right now I have just been working outside at my house. It sucks and it is just not functional. I am waiting patiently to get a garage built here. Kind of weird, my house is 10 years old but they never built a garage here.

So I wont have a problem as far as permits or that stuff. Wonder if I can get insurance even though I am strictly cash business. I wonder if only doing 5-6 a month is worth insurance either.

To rent a business wouldnt be worth it to me. I dont do enough volume.

Wondering how u guys working from home do it

If your neighbors are cool, it's no problem. Consider buying an EZ-Up canopy if you have no shade (my parent's house has a nice maple over the driveway, but I lived in a house that had no shade for a year, and the canopy was worth every penny).

Insurance is not a bad idea, but decide how into it you want to get. I will probably catch some flak for saying this, but I wouldn't bother unless you're using a rotary and doing a lot of heavy correction or wetsanding (and even with insurance, you *don't* want to use it unless you have to).

Even if you have insurance, if the damage is less than 2000 or so, it's not worth a claim. I had full insurance when I was doing aircraft (in case I broke navigation equipment, or the plane crashed and I was going to need a lawyer to clear my name), but it's not really necessary for cars (I'd rather pay 800 for a panel repaint than pay a 500 dollar deductible plus get dropped from coverage and have a helluva time getting general liability in the future).

Drop me a PM if you have any other questions.

The biggest reason why I have insurance is liability and at times I will pickup or deliver a vehicle to a client. If a client comes to pickup a car and trips over a hose/extension cord and breaks an arm or worse dies. You better have your ashe covered. Also it is a good idea to get a LLC. With a LLC and insurance you are making it harder for anyone to go after your personal assets.

Very true. As a Limited Liability Company (LLC), and Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), a Sub Chapter S Corporation (S-Corp) or a C Corporation (C-Corp), you seperate yourself from your company to protect your own butt.

On a side note, a friend of mine is a professional photographer. He is just starting out, his equipment is only worth a few thousand, his car is only worth a few thousand, he doesn't own a home, he has very little money in the bank, and he doesn't have wife or kids relying upon him. Based upon all of this, his attorney told him he may want to wait before turning his company into an LLC because he having so little in assets makes him a poor candidate to sue. You don't sue someone who doesn't have any money so an insurance policy is probably all he needs.

Sure am glad I have a lawyer living across the street that I detail his cars. He is currently working up a will for me in exchange for full details for this 2 cars, and future considerations.

The way I see it, the owner gives you permission to drive their car, therefore, their insurance will cover damage if you get in an accident. Just like if you were driving a friend's vehicle. Their insurance also covers PIP (personal injury protection) if you get hurt. If they fall and get hurt at your home, your homeowner's insurance covers that. If you damage their vehicle while cleaning it, 99 times out of 100, it wouln't be worth making a claim even if you had insurance. Instead of taking out a separate policy, you might want to look into an umbrella policy with $1,000,000 protection. The only time I ever made a claim when I owned a shop was when a dealer vehicle got stolen. Other than that, it's not worth claim something that could raise your permiums more than the claim payout. Work smart, don't rush and avoid potential problems like getting electrical components wet. If you're running a full time shop out of your home, get a policy. Also, check with the City to see if you're even allowed to. It would suck if you grew a nice size business out of your home and the city shut you down.

I ended up getting insurance and I have a DBA. I figured that one of my clients has a lot of exotics and the possibility of burning through the paint and having to pay 10k+ for a Ferrari to get repainted wasn't in my best interest and it also gives my customers some piece of mind.

It will definately give you & your customers more piece of mind, but unless you burn throught the paint on every body panel, it won't cost anywhere close to $10,000 to fix. Repainting exotics aren't that much different that non-exotics. Better to be safe than sorry. How much is your policy premiums?

I think last years premium was somewhere around $645 for the year.

At that price I'd say it would be worth it just to say you are "Insured". I think that goes a long way for the average person, sure they won't know what it means (most of the time) but it's comforting to them...

I have the 850xt... they say you can fit two cars but that would be pretty cramped... It is perfect for working on any single vehicle. Pluss the canvas lets in plenty of filtered light.

lol^^^ that thing wouldnt last 20 min here!!! itd be a parachute with me hanging onto the bottom of it!!

I dont have to worry about being shut down here. I am in rural america here. With my operation I cant pump out big numbers. It is more of pocket money. I would love to have a fixed location full blown shop going. Just dont see there being a market for it. With the cost here to have 1 full time helper and pump out 2-3 cars a dayat 150 a detail. People will not pay more than that. Til I pay all my overhead I would have nothing.

NOt sure what to do but I make decent money at my current job but I want something successful like this business. I need to sit down with someone and get a plan together,
