Anybody follow Paul Dalton on Facebook?

If you do, you'll find that he and Rupes have parted ways. I gather they were not happy and some of the fan boys or minions got very nasty with Paul. I don't have the details but I found the whole thing interesting.
 
I saw it but wasn't impressed.

My very basic understanding off of what I saw was that there was a difference of opinion on a new contract between himself & Rupes. So he walked and make a big deal about it. But IMO it doesn't matter because by his own admission he was "sponsored" by Rupes to use and promote their products. So basically he was a "high-level / High-class" shill... Rupes products are good enough to stand on their own and be what they are.

Respecting your skill and input over the years and having no affiliation with P Sparks, I have read the response's to Paul's 'disassociation' from Rupes on various venues.

I think the term "Shill" (which I've read several times regarding him) is uncalled for. Many in this business, IMHO, are fortunate enough or are promoting themselves in various ways, to receive Mfg. sponsorships or the like.

Same with professional sports figures, Formula One teams, etc. etc.

Now if I'm missing some info about this brouhaha that anyone is willing to share, I will stand corrected.

It is a matte of degree. The test for me is if they were no longer compensated would they stop using the product or as even go negative on the product or sponsor as some have done. If someone is paid to ONLY use one brand and clearly known (like NASCAR branding) then it is obvious. The other is just how much disparage the competition.

At the end of the day Paul is a business person. I just think it's not the best decision to just keep bouncing around with "sponsorships" on a regular basis as it can come across bad on his judgement. Regardless, he certainly has a strong following and even if he supported Turtle Wax he'd likely bring a huge amount of people to the table. And that is one of the reasons why he's had such a huge success. Detailing on your own can only earn you so much for so long.......

I would like to state I admire “PD” and look up to him as something I would aspire to one day due to what he has accomplished and where he has helped to bring the industry too.

I respect your opinion; and I do agree to a point. But maybe I should elaborate on my thoughts & pinion a little more.

A “shill” by most people definition is someone that comes in a pushes a certain product because they are compensated to do so. So in a very basic way PD does the same thing. He doesn’t come out as push but uses his “fame” to do so. So you are correct that the way he goes about it is not really in same way most “shills” do. And I totally understand wanting to be sponsored by a company and thus pushing / advertising their products. (Saving money and getting new free stuff is always good) So yes the term “shill” is a little harsh I do want to publicly apologize for coming off like that. But I don’t see the need to make a huge deal out of the fact that a company sponsoring your tools and detailing products isn’t going to give you more. Doing so is bad form.
 
Look up "shill" in the dictionary to see why it has a negative connotation. It's all about the "deliberate deception factor". Anyhow...

I just checked out this thread because I was curious about who here cares and why. Guess that keeping tabs on PD makes some sense for Pros...Industry Figure that he is.

Eh, maybe I'm cynical, but I always figure that most Industry Figures are very likely compensated in some way for their recommendations, even when their choice of camera/ammo/tires/polisher/whatever might be the best one anyhow. I do think it leaves a bad taste when they switch and suddenly say how their previous choice was so awful and/or how the new one is so much better...so you folks who care might oughta pay attention to how he acts about it down the road.
 
I haven't read anything where PD said anything negative about the tools/polishes, only that they couldn't agree to continue. Then, according to what I read, he was contacted and things got ugly, by the company or by their fans, minions, etc - I don't know.
I do know that no matter how much I love Bogi, Christy Lee and Jessi on All Girls Garage - there's no way in hell I'd run out and buy that snake oil z-max! So, just cause you're great at racing, wrenching, painting, or making me wish I was 25 and single - if you're trying to sell me some crap - I'll smile, decline, and know you're just paying the bills like the rest of us.

Troy, I know slim to none about him, seen some videos, expensive car washes :-) etc. Also, with the exception of Autopia, I have made no comments elsewhere and I generally don't comment on other folk's opinions about others. But many of the "Top Dogs" in Detailing have business affiliations with Mfg.'s and again, unless I'm unaware of his publicly posting falsehoods about Rupes, you are highly respected in this arena and it just struck me as an unlikely comment from you without any backstory.

But I don't want to come off as judgmental either. Just sayin...
