Any wood burners on here?

Angus -

Wow - I apologize for going crazy on my post.. :(
You obviously are well "seasoned" :) with cutting and preparing wood for your home...

I have a Stihl saw now, but my big beast McCullough had a 36" bar on it for some of the little trees in the Tahoe National Forest - and that bar was still too small many times... :)
Best thing they ever invented for cutting is Chisel Chain, but you have to be careful because it will cut through a log so fast, you may not be ready to stop it when it goes all the way through.. :)

Glad you got the big picture ceramic glass ! It will be amazing to see how much heat goes through it.. Its not tempered, so be careful - its almost as hot as the inside...

You are so blessed to have the best hardwoods available for burning !

I have burned all the West Coast woods for years, and the absolute Best was a variety of the many, many Oaks out here - California Live Oak.. It grows in clumps, pretty tall - 40+ feet, very thick and really, really dense..
This particular wood burns the hottest of any wood i have ever used, and will pretty much consume itself and everything else in the box, leaving you with very little ash to remove.. Yeah, its that good ! :)

There may be a similar variety of Oak over in your neck of the woods too.. But look - you have Maple and Ash too !!! Very hard woods and Ash is what they use to make baseball bats out of, so you know its rock hard...

Cant wait to hear how you do with that beautiful piece of art fireplace insert in your house !!

Ha! No worries Dan! You're clearly passionate about this topic :)

Good info on the chisel chain - I may have to look into that when it comes time to replace my current one. Have you ever used Dremels chainsaw sharpener? I just picked one to try out after only using round files to sharpen my chains.

I've seen Live Oaks in South Carolina - amazing trees! We don't have them in PA but I do have a few Pin Oak, White Ash, Norway Maple, and Black Walnut Trees growing in my yard.

I'll keep you in the loop on how the stove works out next week. Cheers!

Thanks !
Yeah, I kind of love going up to the mountains, the only one up there sometimes, the only sounds are the chainsaw, or wind blowing through the huge, tall trees..

Its like being close to Heaven...

No, never used Dremel's sharpener, but if its jigged to give you the perfect angle cut, it should be just fine.. That's how they sharpen your chain if you leave it at the lawnmower, etc., shop anyway..

I have been using a jig clamped to my bar and sharpening my chains with files forever... Hard on your fingers and sometimes you get a little nick here and there..

Yeah, incredibly time consuming - especially on long bars, but I get to see each cutter and how its doing... Kind of like Detailing, you think ? :)

Going out to cut a truckload of wood, I like to have spares for everything, including chains, bars, etc... You dont want to have to stop and not come back fully loaded with wood, right ? :)

Too bad about not having the Live Oaks.. Perhaps its too cold for them that far North?

Any Oak is better than no Oaks, and they smell so good when burning too...

Black Walnut is pretty good too.. There are tons of Walnut trees growing in parts of California - of course both English and Black...

If you have a National Forest around close, that is usually a good place to go get wood...

I always go up there to the Ranger Station, get a firewood cutting permit for a few bucks, a map on where they may be some downed things from logging, etc., and go get some wood !!! :)

Enjoy your new Fireplace Insert !!!! We are all so envious !!! :)
