Any vegans reside in the city?

My youngest daughter wants to go that route. Interested in hearing what you have to say about it. I told her after my birthday Feb.28th I'll go vegetarian for a month. Not vegan but I think I can go meatless for 30 days.

I've got two things to say about that....

1. I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain to live off of vegetables.

2. If man weren't meant to eat meat then cows wouldn't be made of it.

The main thing that you have to remember when you go Vegan is to make sure that you do the proper research before hand, typically you need to find an alternate source of protein as well as making sure you receive a sufficient amount of calcium. I was a Vegan for three years until my doctor told me that it was doing more harm than good since my bones were becoming brittle. "taller guys should usually not go the the Vegan route and instead should be vegetarians if anything" he told me.

Anyway tell your daughter good luck with that, however don't let her just eat bread all the time, one of the biggest pains about being Vegan is reading all the food labels to make sure that there isn't any animal products in the ingredients. A lot of times specialty markets like Trader Joes, and Lazy Acres will have a Vegan aisle in their stores, however in the midwest I'm not sure if there is enough demand for Vegan products. Make sure though about the protein/calcium problem as you don't want her to do any long-term damage to her skeletal structure which may result in osteoperosis and/or arthritis setting on earlier in life. Not to mention breaking bones much easier which is what happened to me.

My wife was a vegatarian when we first met.
It sometimes makes it interesting when you go out for dinner seeing what the chef can make for you, but most of them are pretty good about it.
Tell her to be carefull about comsuming lots of starches, ask her to consider at least eating egg or some fish on occassion, because she will need a source of protiens.

Good Luck.

P.S.
My wife gave that up and we are all happy carnivores :hungry:

I think you said it well... Its the circle of life, deal with it.

I'm not a vegan or veggie, but can appreciate the philosophy behind those who adhere to the proper diet without mocking it. I watched on CNN how the Chinese raise cats and dogs by the boat load in deplorable conditions and then kill and skin them for their hides. (Who knows maybe they eat them too)

Now we all think that's wrong because we have dogs and cats as pets, but that's how the vegans and veggies feel when it comes to the inhumane mechanized farming and slaughtering cows, chickens, lambs, etc...

Same goes with animal testing on cosmetics and other non-medical products. I've seen smuggled video of testing on animals and chimps. I'm thick skinned but felt sick at what I saw. The horrific suffering and down right torturing of these poor creatures. If you guys saw it, you'd be disturbed. A simple Google search brings up loads of it.

There a bunches other sources of protein and iron out there besides meat. As long as you're knowledgeable, you can live a vegan lifestyle. I know 2 girls over the years who live it and are extremely healthy. It's a total lifestyle committment.

Rabbi, I'm no PETA fan, but your daughter can check out their wesbite as there are loads of links for vegan lifestyle and recipes, etc... This way she can be informed on the subject.

I'm a meat eater (just made chicken/vegetable stir fry and rice), but understand why people have philosophical, moral or religious objections to meat eating or animal testing.

if it doesn't moo or cluck, i don't eat it. :D a guy at my gym is a vegetarian and he eats alot of beans for protien(lentyls and such). that is your biggest concern. if you are serious, i would consult a nutritional expert for advice and you will need will power also. good luck.

Absolutely.

It would be a stretch, but I think I could possibly go meatless for 30 days. I wouldn't want to, but in your situation I might give it a try. I think that some vegetarians do allow for the inclusion of fish. I like fish. Vegan, I wouldn't/couldn't do as IIRC it also omits dairy and eggs from the diet. I like milk/cheese/eggs too much. Egg whites are also an excellent clean source of protein.

You go meatless and I'll go veganless:D

I gave up meat as part of one of my CCD classes. It was hard but I came to notice that after the 3rd week, the cravings went away.

My girlfriend is a vegetarian (tell me about it :wall ), and she actually went to a nutritionist a couple weeks in a row to sort of transition and get a short education as to what she NEEDS to eat.

I was soo happy when the 40 days ebded and I was able to head out to Longhorn and eat!

We do have a Trader's Joe and another big store/chain called Wild Oats.
You might want to check the regular supermarkets for a health food section. My wife has Celiac disease and can't have wheat, oats, or barly products. We have a supermarket that is part of a large chain that carries some of the same products that the health food stores have for about 30% to 50% less cost.

As an aside, I do eat meat, but I don't think going without it for 30 days would be a problem. Just so I have my peanut butter.

Rabbi,

If you're going vegan/veggie for 30 days, I'll PM you my address and you can send me any thick, juicy steaks you have hanging around the house. You know . . . so they don't go to waiste.

I highley recomend getting a good multi vitamine, most vegans/vegatarins dont get enought nutriants, also eats alot of beans or penut butter to get some protien. Also dont be supprised if you seem to have very little energy the first little while it takes some time to adjust

I have a month to get ready so I'll start reading about going veggie.
My oldest brother has been vegetartian going on 34 years.
My middle daughter has been a vegetarian going 24(since birth) years.
My youngest for 3 years.
The rest of us are carnivores.

I just disagree with most vegans because most that do it try to preach to me and are not really healthy. Some are healthy though if they do it right. It can be a pain to try to go out to eat with them though haha. But I just dont like when they say not to judge them but they are always telling me how bad meat is and bring flyers and everything. Oh well, I respect their decision. It can be hard but some of them do it right and are healthy.

With that Wild Oats place, I think just a few rows are vegan friendly, where most of it is vegetarian. I could be wrong. There is also usually a few shelves of vegan friendly food at grocery stores, like tofu sausage and what not. Any way, good luck!
