sorry for the noob question but has any one used Z-PC by hand for swirl removal? does it do a good job of removing the defects?

I do use it by hand and it does work. My car was done badly with a rotary when before I bought it and the Z-PC fixed it right up. However, I do want a random orbital in the future to really correct things. In the sun by eye it's great. In a garage under flourescent it could be much better.

is your car black? :)

ZPC by hand does decent job but you have to rub it in real fast to get any real level of correction, just don't press down too hard or you'll have fine little lines everywhere.

I've only ever used it that way in hard to reach and small areas that my machines cannot go.

ZOC works best by machine. If you want to remove swirls by hand try some Meguairs Ultimate Compound and then follow that up with the ZPC.
