Well this has definitely been the season for trashed black Camaros and black trucks!!! This particular Camaro used to be owned by one of my other clients who now owns a black z06 corvette that he road races. I did the corvette earlier this summer and the new owner of the Camaro saw the results and immediately booked a correction and IGL Kenzo coating job. Knowing the previous road race history of this car I knew I was going to be in store for some work! Boy was I right!

This car was thrashed and although and great turn around was performed there are still some areas such as the front and rear bumpers and rockers that are less than stellar. But overall this black paint looks worlds better. As for tools and pads, products used I used just about every machine in my arsenal and a variety of pads too! This paint received mainly a 2 step and in some areas a 3 step.

Tools

G21, Makita rotary, PE8, Adams swirl killer mini

Pads

purple foamed wool, boss microfiber, megs microfiber (3in), Rupes blue, Rupes yellow, LC Black, Flex black finish pad

Justin - that is a spectacular recovery from the tunnel of wash induced swirls, rids and other damage. I do miss those things back when I lived up there during snow season, mainly for the undercarriage washes to help with the abundance of salt on the roads.

Boy that one was really ugly! You did an excellent job especially considering the unforgiving color of the car.

Justins00ss:
Do you find that doing black-colored vehicles takes longer than "other" colors to correct and get to the point where you consider the exterior "perfect" or at least perfect in your opinion/detailing standard???
This has always been a point of contention because time is money and the so-called `extra time" spent to do so should be reflected in price charged for the detailing service. Some say you should charge the same regardless of the color and spend the same time on vehicle regardless of the color. Personally, I find lighter-colored vehicles, like white, to be more "forgiving" (IE, it hides or does not magnify imperfections) than a true non-metallic black.

Do you find yourself using the rotary more than the G21 to do the correction, or more correctly, the initial compounding step. And did the whole car get the SF3800 as the final jeweling/burnishing step and what machine and pad did you use? How does SF3800 compare to CarPro Essense or McKee`s Jeweling Wax or Sonax Perfect Finish 4/6??

Great questions!

As for charging more for darker color vehicles I would say typically I do and it is mainly because yes they do require more work to finish out properly but it does go by a case by case scenario. You are absolutely right that a lighter color car can mask defects much better than a darker color car. Hence why 95% of black vehicles I won`t do unless we are doing at least a 2 step correction. Doing a one step on a neglected black vehicle before coating it isn`t something I would put my name on.

As for the tool I mainly use that would be the g21 and Adams swirl killer mini. I did however pick up another 3401 as a backup because of a recent incident with one of my other tools. This may sound nuts but my g21 with a microfiber cutting pad out cuts my rotary more often than not. Yes the whole car got sf3800 with a LC pro thin pad black. Sf3800 is a pure jeweling or finish polish that doesn`t leave wax or silica behind.

Justin,

Not a lot to say here. Your work speaks for itself! OUTSTANDING RESULT! The owner must be following you around like a nursing puppy....
