another foam gun?

(OK I admit it-I'm cheap) In my travels I stopped at Tractor Supply and looked for a foam gun. What I found was a Hudson 2102 liquid sprayer. It is all plastic with a water only setting and 12 solution ratios, and 3 spray patterns for $9. A quick try indicates that a thin soap works and it sprays a soapy solution. The water only settings are stream, flat spray and a round shower spray. I'm sure the Gilmor is a nicer foam gun but this seems to work.

If it works that's great, but beware of false economy in the long run. The brass fixture of the true Gilmour foam gun is going to last for ages. For me at least, this is an essential tool, even more so than my polishers! Mine's been through pretty heavy use and works fine. I'm sure this is the same for others who have had their guns longer than me. For example, I bet Accumulator will chime in.

Well, yeah, I usually show up on these threads :D

Any foamgun that lets somebody wash without marring is fine in my book :D

The Gilmour ones are well-built, but I *have* retired one that kept leaking too much. Note that my mitt-balloon method puts all sorts of unnatural stresses on the connections, so this might not happen to other people.

wannafbody- Mix up a gallon of solution and fill the gun from that. Mix it sorta strong and play around with the dilution and the settings at the gun until you find what works best for you.

with the 12 settings one full 36oz jar can mix from 6 gallons to 192 gallons of car wash solution-do you use a bucket of saopy water too or simply a water backet for rinsing your mitt?

Accumulator and I use a 2 bucket method when using the guns.

does your cheapo gun dilute the canister with water as it adds the contents to the water stream (eventually the canister becomes pure water) or does the canister just slowly empty?

yes, i rinse my canister out after each wash. I also run clean water thru the machine after each wash. Every so often I run a mild APC solution through it also.

Mine suggests rinsing after each use-do you guys end of doing that?

Nah, I don't. I don't even empty it, I just disconnect it from the hose and leave it sitting there, partially full, on the floor.

well from my initial tesing it seems to spray a stream of soapy water with small, tight bubbles-it doesn't produce a thick foam. I haven't had a chance to actually use it on my car I just tested it out in the garage. It looked similar to the picture of the car covered in soapy foam gun water in the other thread. (post 3 White Honda).

Is there an advantage to a gun that could produce a thick foam vs a soapy water mix? Isn't it the soap that cleans and not the bubbles?

Well, i think the foam actually helps to encapsulate the dirt particles.

On another note, while in Pep Boys this evening, I saw a soap/water trigger gun that caught my attention. Im sure it was well under $50.00 (Going rate for a foam gun?) It has a resevoir in the handle which holds the liquid soap. 2 settings with a typical Hi pressure type nozzle end. Could be a sleeper guys.....I'll let ya know what I find out...

I would bet with a little "Autopianism" it could "foam".....

Ok a little research, here it is....And a little further research told me if is/was available at Costco for $20.00

Pat, I don't think it was even $20 at my local Costco. I will check tomorrow. Gotta pick up a couple more things again.:o

I washed my car today with the Hudson-at the 1.5 to 2 oz settings it provided a watery soapy mix that clung to the body panels. It did not provide a thick rich foam, HOWEVER the amount of lubrication provided during washing was MUCH IMPROVED over a traditional bucket car wash method.
