Another Clay Bar Question

Hello all.

I have read a few write ups on claybar's and noticed only one thing that was not mentioned. They all tell you which is the best, and how to use them.

What they dont state is How many pieces are needed. So here is my questions.

I picked up the Meguiars Clay Bar kit with the quick detail, 2 bars, etc etc.

Do I use 1 of the 2 bars for the entire car? Is Clay Bar'ing only meant for only certain parts of your car that need it?

Just say i want to claybar my entire car. Do I use only one of the claybars they gave me?

you would think after doing half the car, and mushing the clay so that you get another clean slate that after awhile it'll be full of gunk and small pieces that will scratch up the paint.

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

How big are each bars?

The bars I buy are 200g. I chop it up into 4 pieces so 50g each. Just in case I drop a piece - I still have some left; and not just waste a whole bar.

its about the radius of your normal bar of soap you use on yoruself in the shower. But as far as thickness. Its about 1/4" in thickness. from what i saw on one of their youtube video's. the guy just opens up the pakage. flattens it and goes to town.

im sure he just did that cause he was jsut demonstrating it and then jsut tossed it. but it cant be any thicker than 1/4" and slightly smaller than a bar of soap.

It's kind of a waste to use an entire clay bar to clay your car. You'd be better off just taking a chunk of that bar and knead and re-knead it as necessary.

There really is no standard for what size to use when you knead and clay. It's really up to you.

Thaks for the comments. You say to take a piece of it and re-knead. understood. But....After you do the first half or so of the car. wouldn't it be full of junk, or does the stuff you pick up not really affect the paint enough for you to use 1/2 clay bar on the whole thing.

Hello SilentSamurai,

Put simply you will need more clay the larger the area of dirty paintwork!!

Start of with half, only you will know if you need a second part of the bar. You will know this b/c the bar will get dirty. Keep folding and kneeding until you find no more clean surfaces from the clay.

As a rule i have 5 cars, i clay each one, once every 6 months. My clay bars do not get very dirty.

If you car is 5 yrs old, 50000mi on the clock, never clayed and and you do 12000mi per yr your probably going to have a messy time and need both bars!

Start at the top of the car and work your way down to the more dirty areas. These would be the front bumper, hood and the lower panels. Do your windows, it makes cleaning them very easy and they will look great!

If the bar is unusable again b/c you have to work hard to get clean sides then you use it on wheels and chuck it away afterwards!!

Enjoy!

Ha. Now that I read my past comment. i don't know what I was smoking. Of course I would have to get another piece once the previous ones dirty haha. I was just hoping to get a USAGE report almost on how many bars it takes to do a car or 1/2 a bar etc etc.

Thansk fro your comments. Hope I chose the right product. But it seems alot of people enjoy the meguairs clay bar.

Cheers.

I take a Clay Magic 100 gm bar and cut it up into 6-8 pieces. As others said, cutting up the bar allows you to drop a piece and not have to throw out the whole bar of clay. I think I can do a midsize car with something around half a bar.

wow. thats good to know. thanks for the comment. cant wait to try it out. Have yet to have the time to do this but i'll be sure to get a write up going once i get my truck detailed.

Cheers.

Have fun. I love claying.

Feeling the paint all gritty. And then clay the car and it feels sooo smooth! It's so awesome!:getdown

Remember to let the clay do the work. Apply finger tip pressure and let the clay pull out the containments. If you use a mild clay and press too hard, you can induce micromarring and such.:dig
