An Ode to The Brush

I just spoke w/the guys at autogeek.net and their 10" BHB has a hole for a broom handle--which has an opening at the bottom of the hole so that water/foam could run through it. Would u consider trying this alternative to the foam gun in 1 hand and the brush in the other?

also, do you have any posts that better detail your exact process for using the FG and BHB together? At what point do you bring out the mitts?

There's a thread in the Hall of Fame forum with a title like "Accumulator's Non-Marring Wash Technique". Somewhere in that thread (not my initial post) I believe I go into some detail about how I do it. I don't have time to recap it at present, but if you don't find what you're after there post back and I'll explain it.

The BHB with the hole doesn't look too good to me and I wonder if it's the same one that Griot's sells (maybe made by Braun  ). I tried feeding shampoo mix through the Griot's one with a siphon feed but it didn't work well. IMO the best way to do it is to use the foamgun and a regular brush, moving the foamgun along the bristles so they all get a good flushing. The single, fixed hole for the suds to flow from just isn't as good IMO.

In a perfect world they'd make a BHB that attaches to a foamgun with maybe three foamgun nozzles. IMO that'd be the optimal way to do it.

I switch to a mitt after the panels basically look clean, it's really just a follow-up. If there's any abrasive dirt on the panels I want it knocked loose and flushed away via the BHB/foamgun as I believe that's safer than the mitts. Note that this might be a change from what I mention in my Hall of Fame thread (oughta look at it sometime and update it as needed).

I was looking at using a boars hair brush instead of wash mitts. Seem kind of expensive though. I like the idea of using the brush for the initial pass then using a wash mitt.

About how long do they last before the bristles start to deteriorate?

I hate to generalize because there are just *so* many variables...but the short answer is "years, don't worry about it". Yeah, they shed bristles but it's not like they wear out really fast.

Note that my "good" BHB is 20-some years old; OTOH I've replaced others after a few years. You just can't say. But I still think they're worth the expense just because of the way you can cut down on the marring (at least if used properly with a foamgun).

The brush I've been using for 2+ years now is a synthetic from Meguiar's. It shows no signs yet of obvious wear. But they have discontinued them, so I've got a few stashed for the future. The Meg's are very inexpensive compared to BHB.

dpsorg, is that the Meg's body brush you are referring to?
