I've never really heard of Dawning being unsafe. I do it to some of my own personal vehicles up to 3 times a year and have never seen any ill effects. I suppose a weekly wash in Dawn would eventually show some kind of harmful effects. A paint cleaner is a heck of a lot more work. And I wouldn't use any kind of an abrasive product just for the sole purpose of removing wax and not addressing swirls.
Ron K's company made something called the ABC System that was if I remember right a sort of replacement for the clay and Dawn treatment. I've seen rave reviews about it. I can't remember the companies web address though. All these chemical fumes do that to a guy.
