Alternatives to #81 Hand Polish -- ?

I'm having a bit of a love-hate relationship with #81. I love the look that #81 (and its sibling #7, and heck even DC Step 2) gives me. And sometimes it seems to go on and off without difficulty. But on the weekend I did a big detail on my Z and had some smearing problems on removal of #81, and I think it transferred over to my subsequent removal of NXT afterwards as well. Made for a bit of frustration.

I was wondering what other polishes I should try that may give similar looks, but are easier to use.

Ones that come to mind off the top of my head:

- Clearkote Vanilla Moose

- P21S Gloss Enhancing Paint Cleanser (I actually have a bottle of this in my arsenal, just haven't tried it yet... d'oh!)

- Menzerna Final Polish

I'm sort of getting into a routine using #83 DACP (which I'm fairly happy with) and sometimes #82 SFP, and I'm using NXT lately as my protection coat. Will the other glaze-type products I mentioned above be just as compatible as the #81 in this case?

Any other suggestions on similar products I should try? I'm not really going to run out and get one of everything. Obviously I already own GEPC so that's a no brainer that I'll be trying that anyway. But long term I know it'll be more expensive and harder to get, at least here.

Vanilla Moose. It is hard to imagine doing a detail anymore without using VM as my final glaze. Polishing pad and crank the PC up to 6.

:xyxthumbs right on. However I use speed 4!

I also have come to like the new Menzerna Glaze. For me it is easy to work with.

VM by far is the EASIEST glaze to work with.

You can try Mother's Sealant Glaze. Rumor has it that it is layerable on top of wax so you can freshen up your top coat a little down the line if you want to.

Also, I would say #81 is the sibling of #7 given the fact that the #7 recipe is ancient! ;)

Thanks guys. Who should I order some VM from? Would Ranney from Pakshak have the best prices on this (w/ our Autopia discount)?

Since his price includes shipping (and therefore is in total, the same as Clearkote's site) and you get a discount, if it isn't the lowest, it is pretty close. Plus Ranney is a good guy to deal with.

I can relate. Haven't used #81 in a month or so as I experienced a smearing effect with the products I used on top of it as well as with the HP itself. It was slightly humid (think: close to the beach) and I tried Collinite Insulator and S100. Both (yes, even the S100) were difficult to remove, the Collinite being downright stubborn. removal of the waxes left smearing also. I know I shook the he// outta the bottle which was only ~2 weeks old so my inclination would be the humidity. BTW, #81 on toppa DACP. I've got a fix for FP right now.

Yep 81 can be a pain if put on too thick or set too long.

I've had great results with Menzerna FP and better version FPII, which makes it work longer without the difficult nature that it sometimes can be if I also applied too much.

FP leaves a mirror shine, and I mean MIRROR! I use it with a PC and a very fine finish pad as I want the polish to burnish the paint. Once you take it off it's just stunning!

I still use #81 every now and then. #5 works better in humid weather BTW.

It's all selective once you get down to that level. Your eye may or may not see any difference from Menzerna or Meguiars or whomever. At times it can be the time consumed doing the final polish, which one works faster and gets the best results.

Try the FP, if you like it good, if not it's only polish right :nixweiss

You made me think of something. I applied #81 after I had DACP'd the whole car and then removed and followed with #34'd.

When I applied the #81, I applied it with my PC and a polishing pad set at speed 4 and applied it to the entire car. Then I removed it by hand with MFs, doing the body panels in roughly the same order I applied it. Does that mean I let it "set" too long? Are you supposed to do #7/#81 a panel or a few panels at a time and not the whole car?

Thanks.

I don't know what your are supposed to do but I did panel by panel on account of the moisture in the air and it was still a pain. 2 cents.

I NEVER do the whole car. #81 is not a wax and your not suppose to let the product sit on the paint. Do one panel at a time.

Guys, here's a thread on Megs #7 #5 and #81. Please pay close attention to what Mike Phillips says about these products as this will help you in the use of them. Enjoy the read!

HA! I love this place (still a noob).

I did a DACP/ 81/ S100 combo that just about made me cuss in front of the kids. It was humid and the 81 was hard to work with and the S100 was very streaky on top of it. I thought it was just me being a 'noob' so it's nice to see that someone else more knowledgeable had similar experiences......not that I'm glad they were frustrated like me, but that it may not have been just about my "noobness"

I use #81 with a panel by panel technique. I apply to a decent sized portion, (large door, large quarter panel) relax for a bit, then remove with a MF. Works well for me, but I've have yet to use it when it's humid. I'm also not using it on a "customer's" car, just my own at my own leisurely pace.
