Alcohol

In Sweden the choice to go for IPA (IsoPropylAlcohol) before Ethanol is quite easy.

If You are to manufacture and sell a product, which is not meant for consumtion, and it is based on ethanol, You will need a lot of permits and different kind of guarantees that it won´t be available for people to drink.

If one choose to work with IPA, it is much easier regarding this aspect.

Regarding the discussion if ethanol is more agressive to paint than IPA, ther could be that soem studies are made of that.

But I do not think that You will note any major difference. Just think of all Windhshield fluid which is based on alcohols.

In Sweden we have a combination och ethanol and IPA and some longer alcohols.

In Finland it is very common with Methanol.

I only use 10 year old scotch for my alcohol wipe downs. anything less i find to be far inferior.

I could see zymol selling aged single barrel alcohol for wiping down your car.

After all, they sell a car cover for over $4500.

What is the purpose of Menz Top Inspection? It seems like it does the exact same thing as an IPA/water wipedown, but for 10 times the cost.

Yeah, way too expensive for a little bit of added cleaners. That's what made think of adding a drop of ONR to my bottle of IPA/water.

Hey DJ, you know here in North Carolina you can get plenty of alcohol - fresh from the still! You just gotta know the right moonshiner. On a serious note, I like your idea for adding ONR to the wipedown mix, good thinking!

I use alcohol wipes that I get from a friend who works in a GM plant paint shop. They use then to wipe down the cars before painting. I'll check the label to see the content. I know there pretty strong.

The only good use I have found for alcohol is to remove magic marker (or othe such products from paint). As far as aclcohol cracking paint, its not the paint or cc that is cracking it is the excess wax that is being dried out.

I have used FK's 1119 Soil & Coating Remover / Wax & Detail Pre-Cleaner with good results. Dilute it and put it in a large spray bottle. Apply as directions states. Leaves suface nice and clean. Follow with a regular car wash product.

I just checked the label--85 % IPA 15% DW.

Is denatured alcohol the same as IPA?

They're different animals.

In Australia, denatural alcohol is called 'methylated spirit', colloquially known as 'meths'.

Meths is 95% ethanol and 5% methanol, with a bittering agent added to discourage drinking. Methanol is toxic.

IPA is quite expensive in Australia and hard to find. Meths can be bought at the supermarket for a pittance.

I use meths for wipedowns, and the OP is right, it leaves a light residue. Pharmaceutical meths leaves no residue.

In the US meth is something else-LOL

Same here...that's why we're careful to use the plural 'meths' when asking for it at the supermarket so we don't get arrested. :chuckle:
