Do we have anyone here that's into air rifles? Specifically: I'm thinking about getting myself a decent entry-level rifle for pests and the like around my house. Probably some plinking in the yard as well. Not looking to spend a gob of dough either. Anyone?
 
I still have my old Daisy air rifle (I think it's an 860) I got back in the 80's. I haven't used it in a good while (Nowhere to practice target shooting in my neigborhood:(). Does that count?:D
 
I have a Gamo 1200 fps cocking barrel model. Bought it at Sports Authority for about $150. It comes with an inexpensive scope (4X, I believe). .177 caliber. Plenty accurate, and plenty powerful for squirrels and the errant goose that takes up residence in my back yard.

I've got a RWS Diana 34 that shoots .177. It's more than enough to take out some tree rats or tin cans in the back yard. It is deadly accurate at 30-40 yards. My favorite thing about these is they are all steel and wood with no cheap plastic pieces.

Gamo are good guns if you swap the trigger group out. The bad part about Gamo is they are extremely difficult to buy replacement or repair parts for. Gamo wants customers to send their guns back to the factory for any service work.

WalMart has Crosman Quest & Phantom rifles that are very nice for the money (about $100). The only difference in the two is the Quest has a wood stock and the Phantom has a poly.

There are tons of options for air guns and the only limit is your budget.

I have a friend who is big into Air Soft. He has a large collection of them..even grenades lol. A couple of them shoot as hard as a .22
 
Thanks for the links. I will check them out. And yes - budget is a factor. I'd like to spend $150 or less, as this is not going to become any sort of serious hobby. Just need something to handle business around the house and to have a little fun with.
 
Avoid the new Daisy 860's ( around 50$) The stock is sloppy and plastic and the trigger spring is too hard for the gun. Blowing seals are also a problem. If you can find the older version they are great and parts available.

JP, for you what are asking I believe Gamo would be a no brainer. I have one as well as a couple of RWS. I'm not telling you Gamo is the best gun on the market but it'll do what you need at a reasonable price. If you get into it there are all kinds of upgrades and mods available for their line as well.

If you decide to join Sportsmans Guide, you can virtually save the membership fee on the initial price of the rifle. They sell quite a few Gamo models at fairly competitive prices.

Should you opt to go with a higher end gun like RWS, try to look at their upper line. There entry level rifles are by no means any better than the Gamo for instance.

Pockets, I've got a few mods that will make the Ruger rock.
 
Loved my Remington XP100 for target and varmints. Shoots .221 Fireball. Wouln't be good for city.
My dad has it now but still great gun.
Can't wait to get it back.
 
I told Pockets I would post a picture of a 10/22 with a stock I had made. I'm making a twin to this one right now though it has a spiral hammer forged barrel instead of a fluted barrel. I bought these stocks as blanks about the time Fajen went out of business. You can still find ones that are very similar but they come pre-milled. Both of the Ruger's in this picture have virtually all the bells and whistles. My daughter who doesn't get to shoot a great deal can take the pistol and shoot 10 rounds in a dime at 15 yards, the rifle will do the same at 50 yards and beyond. Both shoot very well.

Since I'm a member I don't know what the page you see says. Do you see the member price of $152.99 (I think)?

Another little tid bit here, there scopes are a pretty decent piece for the money. They are a true air rifle scope and hold up to the reverse recoil of an air rifle nicely. I've had more expensive regular rifle scopes and an air gun and they did not hold up so well. I actually have a warrantied scope that Nikon replaced sitting new in the box that one of my air rifles ate. When they sent me the replacement they "suggested" I not use it on an air rifle. ;-) I actually knew not to do this but tried the first just to see how it worked, it was a fail.

Ditto to Pockets' reply. I am truly impressed, GH!

About shooting space, I plink diagonally across my three car garage with both my bow (Mathews LX) and BB gun (Red Rider.)

For reasons known only to God and my wife, I live in the suburbs.
