Advice on removing very stubborn brake dust

I feel bad for neglecting my car by not washing it for over 2 weeks and now I have issues with cleaning my painted wheels. My brembo brake pads dust like there is no tomorrow and since it's been raining on and off, it's on there pretty well.

I tried using the Eagle one A-z wheel cleaner multiple times, but it really didn't do much to the crusty break dust. It feels very very gritty. I have tried using a utility sponge and managed to get 70-80% of it off. Most of it now is stuck in the groovers, but a lot of areas still feel gritty.

Any advice on how to remove this? Will a claybar do the trick? I have learned my lesson dearly! :angry

~One man’s opinion, observation~

I’d try P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner, spray it on leave it for a while, agitate it with a soft brush and then use plenty of water to rinse off.

You’ll then have a ‘clean’ surface to allow an evaluation as to wither or not detailer’s clay is necessary.

~Hope this helps~

Another option would be to try a citrus based degreaser in a diluted solution. This works for me well if the brake dust is a bit greasy. I have no doubt the TOWGT's suggestion of the P21S will work, but if it is not a locally available, you can probably source the degreaser. Mequiar's also has a citrus based APC which I have heard is very good and safe.

I've heard good things about that Meguiars citrus based APC, Citri-Gel,too. Sounds to me like an econonmical alternative to the p21s cleaner. It only comes in gallons.

Autoglym wheel clean did wonders for my mercedes alloy wheels

looks brand new.

Also used it on my Volvo V70 (taxi driven) All the brake dust came off

I would use some older clay if you have some around your garage(not necessary old, but you hate to waste a fresh clay bar on your wheels)

Yeah, clay can do some pretty amazing work when it comes to cleaning up neglected wheels. I've used it to clean up the backside of wheels that were NEVER cleaned before. I'll sometimes use something like EFHI (straight) or something else STRONG for my clay lube, but be sure your clay won't just dissolve if you're gonna try that.

I just read about claying your wheels in David's e-zine. I will need to try that next time I seal my wheels.

Can I ask what kind of car you have that has Brembo's? I have a brake fetish. Pics would be nice too.

I have a black Subaru WRX STi. Here is a pic. I hope it works

Once you get them cleaned, give your wheels a coating of AIO, inside and out. Did my chromies and brake dust pretty much just washes off
