Advice on M105/M205 for removing buffer trails

Hi all, I had a body shop paint my car a couple of months ago, and I'm ready to polish out the buffer trails they left for me. I've never used the Meguiar's twins before so I'm not sure what I'll need. I'll be using a Flex 3401 with LC foam pads. Do you think 205 will be enough to remove the buffer marks, or should I plan on compounding with 105 first? It's a Sikkens clear but I have no idea how hard it is. The reason I'm asking is, I haven't yet bought the polishes and I'd rather buy just the 205 if that's all you think I'll need. I'm unlikely to need 105 for any other job in a long time. Let me know what you think.

I think that really depends on how deep the holograms are, how hard the clear is and whether or not there are any other defects hidden under the holograms/buffer trails. Have you considered buying a 16oz bottle of D300 and two MF cutting pads (I'm assuming you already have the Flex and LC foam pads)? The D300/MF combo can take out serious defects and still finishes nicely, and is overall very user-friendly. If you have any hazing due to the MF pads you could then finish with a foam finishing pad.

Also, I post this having no real experience with m205; I mostly use SF4500 as my finishing polish. M105 is a good, fast cutting compound but I honestly prefer D300/MF to M105 & foam because D300 produces practically no dust and is much easier to use. If I were going for a compound I would use M101.

You might want to take a look at HD Cut and HD Polish 3D International, LLC :: Polishes & Compounds Really easy to work with --- long open times, no dusting, easily removed. Since there are allot of unknowns regarding the paint it almost seems like you really need to have the compound on hand in case you find the polish not correcting to your satisfaction. Another alternative would be HD UNO---medium cut that finishes down well, but just seems to me you'd be better off with Cut and Poloish.

Don't buy either, go to Wal-Mart and pick up Ultimate Compound. Last time I checked it's less than $10 and will cut and polish nicer. Isn't too aggressive and isn't weak. I've had much success using this product in a pinch (like when I'm traveling to a customers house and forget my polishes). I also recommend it to all my customers/friends for an easily attainable product that produces good results.

P-nut- I'd get the 3D Polish or something similar instead of the M205. I've simply gotten sick of dealing with all the Trade Secret Oils that M205 leaves behind, and it doesn't finish out as well for me as some other products (e.g., Menzerna).

And as noted, don't be surprised if you do need the M105 on an aggressive pad to fix those "presumably shallow holograms", which can sometimes be a lot harder to correct than one might expect. I'd try to replace the holograms with the M105's (not-so-micro)marring, possibly stepping down after the aggressive work to M105 on a milder pad. Then correct the micromarring from *that* with your finishing polish.

You can finish with M105, Todd Helme did a great article on it and he nailed it. But, in your case unless you are detailing a lot, just get the consumer grade Meg's at Wally Mart mentioned earlier. It's a like 105 but no dust and longer working time.

Eh, maybe some people can do it, but I sure can't. Under the SunGun M105 leaves issues no matter what I try :nixweiss

I ended up using the M105/M205 combo. The M105 dusted quite a bit but 8 passes with a LC Hydrotech cutting pad did a terrific job removing the holograms. The 205 finished really nice.

No issues with oils at all. The 205 wiped off just like an LSP. I didn't do an IPA wipedown before applying the wax.

Glad to hear m205 worked for someone!

I threw out my bottle, i hated it after the residual oils killed me over and over.

I use both all the time and have had zero issues! Got it off EBay...seemed to be cheaper than my local detail supplier. Tried the Zaino product but switched back to M205. Much better results compared to the Zaino.

I haven't tossed mine, but I have a lot of it that'll probably never get used :o

I agree. Having used 105 then 205 for a while, i switched to the Megs UC and UP combo, worked great, no dusting. Only thing is the UC is not "very" strong. If i have any scratches deeper than the UC can go, I go back to the 105, thankfully i don't come across them that often lol..

There's so many compounds and polishes it's mostly about what works for your car. I can honestly say not a single person given 5 top polishes could identify which did what in a blind test. it's more about your technique and what that, along with your equipment get done, time frame wise and how much you had to exert yourself..
