advice on claying, would it be necessary for me?

What people here are saying though is the clay will take the crap away from the surface and them absorb it into the clay where the polish will just fix other defects in the clear coat by smearing them, which in fact smears the rail dust, bake dust or whatever it may be to a new place on the same panel. Maybe it picks it up when you wipe off the residue but I don't know.

On a car that has very mild surface contamination and mild bumpiness, claying or cleaning will make the paint smooth. However, on a car that's been neglected or has medium to heavy contamination, claying is needed. Either that or a strong abrasive and rotary buffer.

Jaydub, ideally you'd want to clay first to get rid of the contaminants and then clean/polish if you've got any swirls or light scratches.
