Advice needed- 14 year old white Toyota SUV

If the paint is non-metallic, its going to be single stage. Wait until you get a buffer if thats the case. If you do it by hand you will likely make it look worse. Once you get a buffer, Optimum Hyper Polish eats through oxidation better than anything else I've used.

Hmm, not usre if the paint is non-metallic. How do you tell?

I was reading posts on Meguiar's website. I think your right.

I really shouldn't use any kind of Mild abrasive until using a buffer.

I gotta believe the 885 paste wax would be a step up.

How long does it last on a vehicle? 3 months? If garaged 6 plus months?

By using something mildly abrasive and seeing if you get pigment transfer (clear is, well...clear so no "white paint" will come off; single-stage will come off white).

Nothing wrong with using mild abrasives by hand, just a job-of-work to do. Remember that most polishers are just "fast hands that don't get tired".

Not without some kind of pre-wax prep to at least clean the paint. At the very least use some kind of cleaner-wax (e.g., Color-X) or an AIO like the Duragloss or *something*. 885 is only supposed to be used on a previously-prepped surface so you really do need to do some prep.

IMO your expectations as to 885's durability are a quite optimistic, but how long a LSP lasts is one of those YMMV things, just way too many variables for a definite yes/no answer.

I told myself that I would never recommend a product that I have not used, but it seems to me that Meguiar's Color-X might do the trick here. Mild abrasives, chemical cleaners, and it leaves behind enough protection to at least get you through to the next wash, and then you could throw the Collinite on. If you do Ultimate Compound/Ultimate Polish by hand you are not going to have enough arm/desire/will left to put the Collinite on. Also Color-X was designed for hand use and is available at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc.

I second the ColorX idea and also recommend Duragloss 501 both are kinda like SUPER cleaner waxes and you just might be surprised how good a job they can do on their own.
