just wondering if there was a major difference between the pc 7336 and 7424? I just purchased a pc 7336 for $74 at lowes (clearance). Im not sure if I can just buy pads only) and go to work, or do I need to buy anything else balancer, backing plate etc? I normally work with my craftman 10" orbt. but have a need to step up.
 
Velcro backing plate and foam pads. Many sponsers carry them. I paid $12 for my backing plate and $8-9 for each pad. 6.5" to 7.5" seem to be the most used.
 
i guess my biggest fear is the word sander on the box ...... just not ready to burn my paint. thats the reason ive been hestitant on buying.
 
It's only a sander if you use tape sandpaper to it, I've used my 7336 as both and it's great at both. As for your fear of burning the paint, you shouldn't worry at all, I know of one guy on autopia who burned paint with his PC and he left it in one place for about 30 minutes on it's side with a heavy cutting pad and an aggressive compound. As long as you don't do that you'll be fine.
 
i ve been doing a lil research in regards to getting started what up with the counter weight? is this a major neccessity or is it optional? :beat
 
It was my understanding the 7336 had a counter weight. If not I haven't felt a need for one. I'll admit at 6 if you hold the handle it seemed to vibrate the hands a lot. However I held it by the front and found it more comfortable and the vibration to be no problem.
 
when I purchased my 7336 from lowes it came with the counter balance weight. and it works very well. however, I am shopping for pads too :mohawk
 
The 7336 comes with a counterweight for a 6" backing plate. The 7424 comes with a counterweight for a 5" backing plate. If you want to use larger pads (e.g. the 7.5" Lake Country models), then you will want to use the 6" plate and counterweight combo. [Note: Some of sponsors on this board sell counterweights, as well as backing plates, for the PC.]
 
I'm using the 7336 with a 5" backing plate. I'm having absolutely no trouble, it does vibrate a bit at 5.5-6 but I equate that to the dual action that is not the most physically stable system in the world, it works but the forces have to go somewhere.

Anyone know if Lowes has a 30 day price guarantee? Hope so as I'll be going by this week to get $26 if they have the 7336 clearanced here. Might pick up an extra one at that price.

74 bucks is a great price for the 7336. Both the 7424 and the 7336 have exactly the same motor. The 7424 come with a 5" stiff backing plate and a 5" counterweight. The 7336 has a 6" stiff backing plate and a 6" counterweight. That the only difference between them as far as I can tell. I own the 7336, which I also purchased from Lowe's. I ordered a Sonus DAS pad kit for my first pads. It come with a 5" flexible backing plate and pads and it works just fine. I don't feel it is essential to change the 6"CW to a 5"CW IMO. You must buy some kind of flexible backing plate, either 5 or 6", The backing plate that comes with the PC is not suitable for auto detailing.

mdwedt, but CharlesW just told me in the other thread that the 7424 comes with a 6" backing plate, which I suppose is stiff. Or did your 7424 with 5" plate come from Lowe's also?

This is quite confusing. So terribly sorry. But I'm willing to learn.

The OEM backing plates that are included in the PC box are used for applying adhesive backed sanding discs. You normally have to purchase an aftermarket velcro backing plate for use with auto detailing foam pads. Velcro backing plates come in both solid/stiff and flexible versions.

Different kits from different suppliers will very likely have different accessories. You need to go to the suppiers site and read what is included with their particular package.

I have a 7424 and the counter weight says "use 5 inch pads only". I have a 6" backing plate and I use 7.5" pads. So shoud i be looking for a new counter weight? And what woudl the differneces be with a new counterwieght?

Less vibration would be the only real noticeable difference. Maybe a little less wear and tear on the PC over a long period of time. I don't think I would go very far out of my way to change it. I think I remember a thread at another forum where someone stated they changed it out and it didn't make too much difference.
 
well i went in and out of the box and there was no counter weight. I did find out that it does not come with the 7336 sp version (? da difference).
Not that i guess this issue has been solved i plan on ordering sonus pad and backing plate.
