Acid on wheels

Hello everyone. I detailed a 2001 jeep Cherokee limited two days ago and the owner hadn’t cleaned the wheels in over a year he said. They were black and very nasty. I waited for wheels to cool then preceded to use Megs hot rims wheel cleaner. Didn’t do too much good. Then I busted out the wheel brush and scrubbed and got most of the black off and stuff but it took me forever to do the wheels that way. And even after I used the polish on them they still had tiny black spots on them. Now my thing is when I was at my buddy Brent’s car detailing shop when I lived in Denver he used acid on this Audi's wheels and it took all the black right off and made them come out clean and perfect. After that Jeep im wondering maybe I should get some of that stuff, but the trouble is I have no idea where to even find something like what he was using. I’m not a pro detailer like my friend Brent cus I just do some jobs on the side. So anyway Thanks for your advice in advance. Have an awesome day!
 
Have you used the P21S Wheel Gel yet? That stuff worked miracles when I washed the insides of my wife's Explorer's wheels that hadn't seen cleaning in over 6 years!
 
Usually the only acid that can cut heavy dust like that is Hydroflouric and Ammonia Bi-Flouride acid. Both of these acids are extremely dangerous to both you and the environment, if not used properly.

I would go for the wheel brightener. It's powerful stuff. Only use it when you have to. It does contain ammonia biflouride. It will turn the rotors on the vehicle a rust color so avoid hitting those.

I wonder if that cement cleaning stuff would work - muratic acid??



anyone ever try it - can get it at home depot etc...
 
Muratic acid is the same thing as hydrochloric acid except the solvent:solute ratio is smaller (less hydrochloric acid per water.) Although I would recommend going with pre-diluted solution like Megs Wheel Brightener or Eagle One Tire and Wheel Cleaner you can dilute muratic acid with water and test it on a inconspicous area. Remember it also depends on the wheels too, if the wheels are OEM I suspect they are clearcoated although they could also be alloys.
 
However, muratic acid usually too strong to use straight out of the container, make sure you dilute it at least until you can barely notice vapors rising from the solution. Personally if you have the extra resources to purchase a wheel cleaner like Groits or P21 I would go that route. They are both safer for you and our environment.
