Accident!!!!

Well, it finally happened to me!



Driving along on I-80WB going to work and some irate lady was tailgating me (I'm going 80+mph) then she goes to pass me on the right, gets right along side me, then starts coming over! I slammed on the brakes, but there's nothing I could do...it was either go in the wall and make it look like my fault and only involve me, or hold my lane and let her hit, which she did. Took out the front quarter panel, light, bumper, hubcap, and the door is scratched pretty well (but not dented). The cop cited her at fault and busted her a ticket for improper lane change:getdown



I'm really sick of the Chicago-driver attitude up here! Where can I move where everyone is courteous and are respectful of other drivers (ie move over when going slow, waiting turns, etc)?:rolleyes:



Pictures of my once beautiful co car are to come...they are cell pics, but still look decent...Are there any accident my fellow Autopian's have experienced lately?
 
Sorry to hear that Mhadden! Well defintly do not move to Massachusetts, we are the worst drivers! I agree though, I am so sick of people being as rude as possible on the road, not obeying any type of traffic lights or signs and just thinking they can do anything they want without consequence! I cant stand it! We are glad your ok and a car can fixed...especially by HER insurance company. If her insurance company calls to ask you all kinds of questions just keep answering with the fact that she was sited at the scene....nothing more to say!

To answer your question, there is no where you can move. Idiots are everywhere these days. It has gotten increasingly worse here in the Charlotte area in the last couple of years.

Your right, it really does seem that in the past couple years peoples driving has gotten worse and worse.
 
Thanks for the praise, guys. Fortunately, it was my company car and not my personal car; I won't be stuck with it for the next 10 years. Unfortunately, I treat that car like its mine (polish, seal, wax, etc). It pains me to see something I've taken care of get wrecked because of some idiot who was late to work (or whatever).



When it happened, I seriously thought she got the WHOLE side of the car (since the mirror was all pushed in and everything). But it turned out to basically be the front pass area. The only thing that's going to be a headache with the whole experience is HER insurance. She has some insurance through an online company...I waited on hold for 20 minutes the phone rang like it was going to someone, then they picked up the phone and hung up! Then I had to wait (again) for another 20-25 minutes only to find out they don't service her policy (actually through another company). Called them and waited on hold for 35 minutes (no joke) to find out they will send (by mail, they wouldn't e-mail or fax them) forms for me to fill out, then I have to go to an "approved" body shop on their list to have it looked at (probably a bunch of Joe Blow's:grrr). Then they will submit the estimate and it'll finally get repaired. What a crock.

And that's probably because they have very strict driving laws! I think its funny how some studies say that increasing the speed limit decreases fatalities and accidents(not that I know its true for sure, but seems logical), but we still have 55mph speed limits around the city here...sometimes I think its purely because of revenue (tickets) but whenever traffic is holed up, you can always count on it being the driver that actually is going the speed limit!

Man, I'm just glad you're not hurt. I know the headache of dealing with insurance companies. Hope it all comes out ok and isnt too much of a headache.

This is illegal in Massachusetts. Unless you know that for fact I would look into it in Chicago too.
 
Sorry to hear what happened at least no injuries. Oregon is rated most courteous drivers; just don't come to Philly wow city of brotherly love; not this city very mean people here very mean and driving just is not fun its dangerous.

Yes, in Indiana its the same way. But IL is either different, or they think they can get away with that. I def. plan on looking into it further on Monday. My work doesn't care as long as it gets fixed, but I care! I want it done right! Especially since my company keeps their co cars for 8-10 years!
 
Matt, you can contact your own insurance company and have the damage fixed under your comprehensive coverage they will get your vehicle fixed in a timely manner at a place of your choosing and subrogate the charges back to the woman's insurance company. You have to pay your deductible up front but you will get that back during the subrogation. No need to even put up with that other companies BS.



Call your agent and discuss this with him.



Chitown is a bad place for sure. Besides some of the worst roads in the country they are not built to handle the amount of traffic. Chicago drivers are by-in-large very uncourteous probably in large part because of the horrendous traffic problems they face daily. When the roads are not as congested, the drivers are more courteous, IMO.



I just drove from Cape Coral, FL to Milwaukee, WI and can say that I thought the most courteous drivers were in Georgia and Tennessee. Specifically, I found the drivers in and around Atlanta, Chattanooga and Nashville to be very courteous, FWIW.
 
I've spent my life growing up here in Taxachusetts. Not only are the drivers terrible but they also possess that yankee arrogance where they will cut you off and then flip you off to boot. However, there is one state that borders us that has always brought me a sense of calmness and serenity. I can't describe it in words but I feel it when I go there. My favorite New England state has always been New Hampshire. When I was married, I would vacation in the White Mountains every summer. On the highway on way home, do you know how I knew I was back in Mass? It wasn't the "Welcome to Massachusetts" sign. It was my blood pressure going back up from the a$$hole riding my a$$.

Don't come to utah. Everyone drives SUV's while talking on cell phones, while trying to keep 6 kids under control, while trying to bottle feed the kid in the back seat, while trying to change lanes. Welcome to Utah, please get in the far right lane to pass.

Thing is, its not my car, its not insured under my name (its under the company's). So unless my company wants to pay the $500 ded. and face an increase in rates (which they don't want), it won't go that route. It would only go that route if the lady didn't have insurance, but fortunately (or unfortunately) she does. Oh well, it'll get fixed...but if it was my personal car, I'd be going about all of this a completely different way!:bat

Ha, Wisconsin is the same. You pass in the right lane. It's actually worse there than in IL...I've even seen some "brows" on cars that says "If you're reading this, move the F*** over!". Pretty funny, but the people probably won't even look back to see it!:grinno:

It almost sounds like they want an approved shop to do the estimate and after that... I know every accident I got in, the insurance company came out to look at my car, wrote up the damages and gave me an estimate or totaled the car, but they may have a shop take this place on this crappy policy.



Hopefully you can have the approved shop give you the estimate, get the insurance company to cut you a check and then take it to a shop of your choosing.
 
I'm going to call the Honda dealership down the road from my work and ask them who they outsource their body work too (most dealerships seem to do this now). Once they tell me, I will see if that shop is on the list...
 
Well finally after a week of waiting, we got the insurance paperwork. It does state that I can go to one of their shops and get a qoute and call it good, or I have to go get 2 qoutes from others. So, hopefully this will go better than I expected. I'm out of town right now, but when I get back next week I'm going to get this done! Hopefully I can have this thing fixed in the next month!



It pains me to detail my car and have to see that. My neighbors think I'm crazy because I'm detailing my car (still) with it being damaged. I told them just because its messed up doesn't mean I should have to treat it any different! Maybe that's the "normal peoples" mentality, but not here on Autopia!
