a vibrations...

Heh heh...gee, I'm just too nice a guy for this cut-throat world of detailing :chuckle:

And people wonder why I believe I have to do it myself.... ;)

It is a shame these things happen, but people are people and any of the seven deadly sins will come in guys no matter the occupation. I know I am heavy handed at times......................but it is needed as I say the things that need to be said not because I am a "tough guy" but I have a line that I will not let people cross if it is the wrong thing to do and I try and live by that code for my conduct as well.

The detailing trade is filled with now...................... thanks to "Instant social media" of some who embellish what they do, what they sell, pictures, and all manner of A**hatness. People want to be a "Guru" or "Big baller" with pics showing "I am doing this and you ARE NOT" with a totally false persona of what they are really doing to what is shown. It get's worse....................... there is even totally false dis-information put out about certain things, then when the dis-information is debunked in PRINT .............. the same person now takes that info as if he came out with it............................multiple times I s**t you not.

I could get Bob Willis style nasty on this..................... but for some who I really respect I will refrain, but if the guy I am speaking of does not shake himself it will be a tame compared to what was revealed about "The Ming" who btw screamed down a newby detailer with F-bombs and the usual "Don't you know who I am BS and I showed Saunders, Willis and Richie how to detail recently.............yes Rich I know about this as I find out always and you shook my hand once again at SEMA saying you have changed.................. guess not.

I respect and fear you at the same time Bob. :pop2:

No seriously, I like your kind of person. ;)

This problem has always been around in this industry as well as others. It's just the nature of the crooked businessman has changed in how they pull the wool over a customer's eyes. Spot on observation with social media and the way folks choose to market themselves. I've heard someone say how no one spends time on lower panels because it's not noticed. I disagree.

One of the reasons I have started focusing on video presentations of my work is because it's difficult to hide anything when you're reviewing a whole panel before/after with a moving video. I feel it shows an openness to expressing the whole picture and not just a snap shot of the best part.

I think the problem is that people have unrealistic expectations with coatings and their scratch and marr resistance. My car is still swirl free going on 11 months now and it really comes down to proper care. I do feel they offer some additional benefit at reducing marring, but people need to realize they're not bullet proof and if you neglect the paint they will still scratch/marr.

Well said Chad. Did a customers Tesla not 2 months ago with Opti-Coat, gave a lesson on how to properly care for it. He called me today saying it's all swirled up wants it fixed, again! Went to look at it today, way worse then the first correction! He said he saw were the stuff (OC) is bullet proof, not so much I told him. Must still be cared for properly.

It's 100% the job of the professional applying the coating to fairly present the expectations a client should have. You can't force someone to listen, but someone can't honestly stick their head in a hole thinking by not discussing it they are not liable for ignorance of their client. I can't verify if it's true as I was not there to hear them say it, but I've heard of folks in our industry embellishing what coatings can and can't do so the sell is easier. For some businessmen, the $ is the bottom line and all else is fair game.

I dunno, I never seem to get much correction out of M205, no matter what pad I use it with :nixweiss

205 and a MF Finishing pad has become the go-to combination for correction with the Rupes 21 for several detailers. Bryan B. was the one who first introduced it to me, and the cut is pretty unbelievable.

Low speed(2), slow arm speed, even firm pressure, proper pad priming and cleaning as you go.

But it's probably just the 205 filling despite all of the wipe downs with Eraser.

This combo with the Rupes 21 does real correction, not filling.

Teslas have soft paint!

Sounds like someone I know....

I'm very upfront with my clients on the coatings abilities and I provided them with discounted products and how to articles/videos to help maintain their investment with me. At the end of the day though, most owners simply are not as OCD as we are and they will get lazy and revert back to their old ways or cut corners.

Huh, OK, thanks for schooling me. Makes sense, a more effective machine can really impact what a given pad/product combo can do.

205 fills pretty well!!! and doesnt finish down on softer paints...dont see how its labeled as Ultra-finishing polish

After running into pretty damn soft paint tonight my opinion has changed on this. You are correct. After the soft paint whipped my *** for a while I made it a point to come in here and post this.

Was re-reading this thread and reflecting on the joy of being unaffiliated. It's great to not have a dog in the fight - that's not to say I don't have products or machines I prefer and use and reasons for that - it just means, beyond looking for a way to get a great result better, faster and easier, I could pretty much care less how things shake out.

I've also been looking at the diagrams regarding centripetal force on random orbital machines. The movement is along a circle, applied to the center of the pad which free floats. So, all the force/movement is applied to every part of the pad at the same time and in exactly the same direction, no matter what part of the pad you look at. In a vacuum with no friction in the center and a perfectly balanced pad, is there any reason for the pad to spin? I don't see it.

In the real world, the friction of the bearing will impart a spin to the pad and because that small amount of force will build rapidly because of the rpms it looks to create a lot of force, but the real time energy can be measured by taping a string to the edge of the pad and measuring the pull on the string.

Eric,

If you're having any trouble at all getting a great result with your Rupes, contact Richard at Show Car Detailing. The combination of the new Buff and Shine microfiber pad and a Menzerna polish on that machine is impressive.
