A super-swirled "BLACK FRIDAY" *56k* NO

EBPcivicsi

GOT PREP?
While some people were out fighting the crowds on Friday, I was detailing a SEVERELY swirled HUMMER (I wouldn't have it any other way :) ). The truck was evidently traded in by a doctor (who had just about every accessory imaginable installed in it) and the dealer wanted the swirls removed. This was my first time detailing for a delaership and I must say that it was a pleasant experience. They had no problem with my price, gave me my own stall to work with (which was heated thank goodness), and allowed me to have full access to anything that I needed.

IMO, the truck was repaired to about 90-95%, I just couldn’t get all of the swirls out. Perhaps I need to work on my process or find a stronger compound, or both. It probably could have used another pass with the rotary, but time did not allow.

Anyways, the process was a little different for this one, but it seemed to work OK.

First step was to get the truck clean. The tire shine that the dealer had already applied was horrible, it made a thick gooey mess on all rubber and vinyl surfaces…..it was NOT applied sparingly to say the least.

Once I got the paint clean the process was:

-Apply Hi-Temp Extreme cut with a twisted wool pad via the rotary @2200 RPM’s.

I left the product residue on the paint.

-Apply Meguiars #83 via the rotary and a polishing pad. I removed the product on the panel that I was working on by misting the paint with Meguiars Last touch detail spray.

I then used my blower to blow all of the dust off of the paint and glass. Used Hi-temp prep wash to remove dust from jams and windows.

-I then applied Meguiars #80 via the PC with a polishing @5.5.

-Apply to two coats of NXT via the PC and a finishing pad.

-A final coat of OCW was applied to all paint, chrome, and glass.

-Cleaned glass with NXT glass cleaner and a Meguiars ultimate wipe.

-Clean all wax build up from trim using Hi-Temp prep wash (5:1), then dress with Hi-Temp bumper restorer.

-Tires dressed with Meguiars Hyper dressing 1:1

-Wheels polished with NXT metal polysh

-All products removed with MF.

-Total time 5.5 hours, no interior work

There is definitely still some marring in the paint. I think next time I will try on e more pass with the rotary, perhaps one with HT heavy cut via a knitted wool pad, then the #83, etc. ????

I was a little down because I couldn’t remove ALL of the marring, but they were blown away. I am going to take from this detail just how big these suckers are and how difficult it can be to work on GM paint….especially black (it polishes beautifully, but seems as hard as glass). I will try and improve my process for next time and we’ll see what happens. :o

Those are some serious swirls!!! I am very impressed with the job you did on that Hummer, it looks unbelievable! AWESOME JOB!!

The detail is absolutely stunning, but what's even more impressive is the time it took! It takes me an hour and a half for an "express" detail (wash/QD) on one of those.

Great work!

how does paint get that swirled? it reminds me of pre-op skin before going under the knife on those medical shows...gross!

anyhow, great jaerb!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs

Look at the after pictures. Simply amazing.

Please don't worry about the little bit of marring that was left behind. (I couldn't see it). What do you think would have happened if someone else did the detail?

Give yourself more credit please.

Ohh... $$$$????

UGH, reminds me of my dad's minivan. I hope I never have to deal with swirls like that ever again. Awesome job on that Hummer! To top it all off, it had to be black too! :(

That miniscule amount of marring left is nothing compared to what was there before you started.

Only 5.5 hours spent on that huge mofo of a vehicle is an incredible job in my books.

That is my biggest complaint on rotary work. Always think that you should be able to get more. Just one more pass will get them all.

I agree that GM paint is difficult to work with. Have a black silverado.

You should be proud of yoruself!! Great job!!! Am also impressed with the amount of time spent. It takes days for me to get results like you have shown.

WoW what stunning work esp when considering how bad it was! I ahve never seen a blak car that bad!

I would say you have perfected it as far as is 'reasonably practicable' within the working constraints.

Give yourself more credit as well! Don't be too dissapointed at the odd mark remaining as I feel the amount of 'good' paint you would have to remove to achieve 100% in these circumstances can be unaceptable when compared to the ever so slightly better outcome

Top job that we can all learn from!
