Toms Detailing

Hey guys, I am detailing my neighbors BLACK Silverado tomorrow. The paint is in poor condition for it's age (2000) and the paint feels gritty, with massive amounts of micro scratching etc. he drop the car off to me tonight, so I figured I would I would QD the hood real quick, clay bar it and use a cleaner-swirl remover on it just to get the upper hand on tomorrow's job. Well, after the clay bar the paint was clean and smooth, I then went to 3m cleaner and swirl remover on my PC with my cutting pad, that seemed to get out the very minor stuff, but there are tons of scratching and little pits marks (looks like from sand or something) all over the hood, it looks like crap under light, but much better than before. So then I use some FI 2 with no improvement at all, I then tried IHG with little improvement then mothers carnuba with yet a little more improvement, but still far from my quality control.... What do I do? I don't own a direct drive buffer and never needed one in the past, if its not in bright light it looks great, other wise crappy. PLEASE help me. Whatever i need to use has to come from a local over the counter source

Thanks very much

Tom

Does it look like the paint is permenantly damaged? Like rock chips or sand blasting? If so then there really isn't a whole lot that can be done to fix it.

yea i am sure some of it is permanet, but some of it is light scratches, almost like dirt was rubbed in when it was dirty, no just the standard spider webbing.

Lived out there for 11 years, in the manufacturering of car care chemicals.

What is on the vehicle is called Industrial Fallout.

It is a combination of ferrous oxides, minerals, acids, alkalines, etc.

You could clay it, but in a month, the condition is going to return.

It need some serious "decontamination", "neutralization", of the paint system.

Try checking out our site, www.autoint.com and the Tech Tips Section and the Magazine Articles Sections, then go to the OEM/TSB Section.

There is a lot there, pretty technical on the issues, but if you take the time and read the text, look at the pictures and bring them together, may make the condition of the paint easier to understand.

What needs to be done, and why it needs to be done.

Or, you can just get a rotary buffer and whale away, take some clay and wear out your arms.

I've actually had some experience with industrial fallout. I have it on my car. It is also called 'rail dust'. This is why cars have that tape stuff covering the body panels when they are being transported. If hot material, like brake dust or metal shavings that fly up off train tracks, get on the paint they are embedded in the finish. I'd follow Ron's directions on how to get rid of it, if that is what it is. If claying didn't remove it then you are probably going to have to use something much stronger.

Im no expert but, I have experience with FI-2, and I seem to get rapid results with FI-2 and a wool pad, followed by Meguiars SMR 2.0 with a foam pad. Then followed that with Z1, and Z5/Z2

Thanks for the responses guys, I talked with he owner of the car and showed him the half of he hood that I did, he was very happy with the job and awwed at the smoothness compared to the other half, I told him I could possibly do more to the imperfections that are left but it would be more labor etc, he said it looked fine to him. So i guess costumer satisfaction is number one right? thanks for the help guys. now only if my new dang pc would stop smoking (see my other post)

Thanks again
