With mechanics, most of the guys I deal with know that I want to learn about my vehicle, and keep track of it, but I lack the means and desire to do the work myself. Most of the time these guys are willing to have me watch and ask questions as they do the work since they know I'm not going to turn around and do it myself. Most detailing customers aren't this way. They figure once they know "just enough" to get by on their own, they'll do it.
Generally I will only let someone else lay hands on my car when the service needed requires tools I don't have or can't reasonably purchase. For example there is no way I could afford a Hunter balancing machine to do a road force balance on my tires or any of the other tools required to mount and balanace tires, or an aligment machine.
This is why I made the analogy, sounds to me the guy knows what he wants done and possibly, how to do it himself but lacks the tools and possibly the time.... :nixweiss
