A new girl in a mostly guys world

I know nothing of the detailing business per se, but business in general. Incorporation, benefits of certain business structures over others, insurance issues...

Winter is the big problem in our parts, but it also presents big opportunity. If you can find a suitable indoor location where you can do winter wash/polish/wax packages, I'm sure people who love their cars would be interested.

I use to go to this indoor self wash on Midland Ave. in Scarborough and bring my two buckets and other gear, but they have really clamped down on allowing your own supplies. I'm sure many car enthusiasts would love the get a caring wash in the winter from a reliable person.

True, for an indoor location I would need to at least come into the Durham Region close to the 401. Think its important to be reasonably accessible to all areas ... I don't think anyone would mind a short travel if the service was worth it and DR opens me up to both the GTA and Northumberland county.

Hey all,

I am in Ontario Canada. Currently gearing up to get my own mobile detailing business going and to work my way into having a shop as well as mobile service. I have a lot of the essentials ready neat and organized but of course I want to stand out and separate myself from the rest by offering superior detailing either threw processes, products, the little things etc. I have been reading a number of post and I am finding some great info here.
I am currently getting packages and pricing together for my services and looking for tips and tricks. What are the most popular combo's? What is the best way to break down the pricing? Being that I have not had the experience some or most of you have had what are the biggest complaints and compliments customers offer for feed back?
I am not concerned about being relatively green but I do want to go out with my best foot forward. I have detailed many cars for friends and family but now venturing out into referrals and advertising.
A big headache for me so far is the salt stains... maybe a basic question but hey I'll ask anyhow. How can i get these out with out killing myself and my time. Product recommendations?
One of my referrals will be for doing aircraft interiors for a charter company. Anyone detailed a plane that can give me a heads up on pricing breakdowns products etc.

I guess that's a long intro but I need the dirt (so to speak)....

Thanks
Holly

hi Holly! nice to see that I'm not the only girl here. I'm Cris :)

Hi and welcome Holly! Nice to see another woman here.

Theres so much to know about detailing its hard to know where to start !

In the beggining I did some advertizing to get me started and also got some magnetic signs made up for my van . And of course business cards, spread them everywhere you can ...friends ,coffee shops ,auto repair shops , autobody shops ect ect.

I would really recommend getting some proffesional training . Try to find some seminars in your area or find someone that can give you one on one training . Its very tough to learn as you go with no help .

I was lucky enough to train with someone for a week soon after I got started and in those 7 days I learned quite a bit.

I recommend claying every car before waxing . The wax goes on easier and the customers love that slick smooth feel of the paint .

Personally I hand wax almost all my vehicles and customers really love that too . Its faster and easier to use a machine but really I enjoy doing it by hand. Its a great workout too! Honestly either way is fine but just letting you know my customers love the handwax.

When using dressing on the interior vinyl make sure to buff off the extra . I found out early on , people do not like getting their hands greasy after touching vinyle that has too much dressing on it.

Double check your work as you go and later because as the sun shifts often you will see areas that you missed because of poor lighting.

If your not using microfiber towels yet it is a must have for windows and wax!

Good luck and Ill add to this thread when I think of more things.
