A little magic eraser on leather post

I tried some Lexol, Meguiars leather cleaner, and Woolite with a toothbrush, terrycloth, and horse hair brush and nothing would touch my explorer seats. I just got it 3k miles ago and the first thing I noticed when opening the door at the dealer was how dirty the leather was even after their "detail". I finally tried a magic eraser and the results should speak for themselves. I need to finish it now and condition them again. I did this last night in the dark and took it to get an oil change and had to explain what was wrong with the seat, lol. I also just now (while grilling out) did a 50/50 of my wifes seats. 52k miles and never cleaned other than wiped. Thank God I found this site! However, she likes them better shiny she says, lol.

Did you use any kind product with the magic eraser? Any special technique ?

We use the magic eraser on almost *every* detail--especially when coated leather is involved. We just use water(or APC if it is really dirty), the magic eraser, and the triangle attachment on the vapor steamer.

Credit to Sphilcy for making try the magic eraser.

That's pretty amazing! I am very curious as to how bad your seats were initially. I've tried all cleaners including saddle wax on my car seats without any success until my desperate and completely determined self decided to use SPRAY NINE:nervous: .

It actually worked like a charm. I also made sure that I thoroughly rinsed and dried the product followed by some conditioning afterwards.

I always worry about using the ME's on leather because they are so abrasive, it seems they may remove some coating from the seats, accelerating the possibility of deterioration.

That being said, ME's are effective.

Yea, I'm quite apprehensive about using something that abrasive on them. I think I'll stick with my fingernail brush and woolite mix. I mean, leather is just like skin, and we should treat it as such, correct? So, which would you rather have rubbing against your skin - soft haired brush or a magic eraser? I dunno, nothing totally against it as I obviously don't have proof of either necessarily being better than the other, just thinking out loud...

Regardless, seats look like they will come out looking great!

I cant really picture a fingernail brush. Can you pick one up at Wal Mart or is it a specialty thing? Will it clean as well as this did? I am sure willing to try! AS for technique and products used, I tried to use the eraser and woolite mix, but water seemed to work just as well so I did the majority with just water. I was amazed after doing just half of the seat bottom of my wifes car and then rinsing out the eraser how much crud came out. Nasty! Many people dont realize (my self formally included) just how nasty your leather gets in a short period of time because it turns gradually and you are used to it. When you do a 50/50 like this, it is quite a wakup call how nasty you have been leaving your car even after you thought you were detailing it. Oh well, I just added even more time to my routine, lol.

I am also becoming leary about the ME. It works well, maybe too well. I did a test on some smooth vinyl, that I properly cleaned, and it still turned dark. Not scientific but makes me wonder.

I stopped using ME's on leather quite some time ago. They're pretty abrasive and will definitely remove some (if not all) of the leather's top coat.

I ME's are like any other "serious" tool, it takes common sense and knowledge of the material. There is no need to scrub until the top coat is compromised. Simply spray a little APC into the ME, lightly wipe the seat, steam with MF-covered triangle attachmnet.

On my personal vehicles I would never need to use ME's at all. On some of the turds we get in the shop, *nothing* else would clean as efficiently. We go through about a dozen ME's a week--we use them on just about every interior material with the exception of a few "glossy" trim pieces.
