A golden opportunity

Gday Autopia,

I'm an Australian enthusiast who stumbled across this site about a week ago, and have spent many, many hours reading, researching, reading again, and then viewing outside the forums for more!, I never thought an autopian society like this would exist, its just great :up

Now a quick background and a request for some advice.

Three years ago I bought my first car after looking for 12 months. It had to be a HR Holden (66-67). I lucked out when I found mine bigtime (its easily doubled in value since!). It had recently been restored, including a new paint job, of brilliant champagne metallic gold, and coated in '13L of clear coat' (so says prev. owner). Some months later I was talking to my friends dad about his recently award winning car, and he said he just started using a mothers 3 step polishing process. I hadnt done anything apart from wash my car, so I dove in and got set up. So begins my entry into the world of detailing.

Now I've always tried new things to get my car pretty, a slow rise from newbie if you will, and have ultimately been satisfied with the results.

But nowdays my car has alot of swirlmarks, and has lost its shine in need of a good polish and wax. And then I found this site.

Claying is new to me, SMRs aswell, and I now have a proper understanding of what each product does, and its uses. Armed with all this knowledge I went hunting at autoparts stores today.

While I'd love to order alot of stuff to try off of the net, I'm not financially prepared to right now and my car isnt looking its best. PC is out of the question for now, too. Heres a list of products I have or can get locally,

Meguiars Claybar - only one Ive found locally so far, but seems fair in price and performance.

Meguiars #9 - I was after something a little more harsh then the mothers prewax cleaner this time around as the swirls are more noticeable.

Meguiars #7 or Mothers Step 2 - I'm willing to try something new here, but finding it is something else all together.

Meguiars #26, Gold Class, NXT, Mothers Step 3 - I was hoping to find some #16 today, but had no luck. #26 seems

I would love to try klasse twins and p21s aswell.

Heres the dish, Ill be claying my car for the first time, and I might as well have a go at the swirlmarks, but I dont know if I should go the #7 and #26 now or use up my mothers and wait for a few months and order in some fancy stuff. Will this set do wonders for my metallic gold? I had new whitewall tyres put on before christmas too, and was wondering what care is best for them. I only have meguiars endurance gel, the purple stuff, that I used on my older tyres, what an awesome goo that is!

Heres a pic after a three phase (the best its had) from christmas 2003,

My gallery has other shots too, although I've since learnt about what pictures to take, thanks to autopia.

Its alot to take in all at once, but I always had the bug and its decided to bite properly right now :D

Well #7 wont remove anything, it has no cleaning abilities or abrasives. It is oily and will cover up some swirls, and is nice under a wax.

If i were you i would buy some ScratchX, and some terry applicators.

Clay, then scratchX, then i would put on some NXT.

Ive used #7 and #26. I wasnt too fond of #7, not to mention a lot of people have had trouble with applying and taking it off. It did brighten the finish, but it was extremely oily. I think this product is more for someone right before a contest to get that POP for the time being as it doesnt last long at all.

#26 I really like and feel as if its a little underrated. Then again i feel as if you use the proper prep work before a wax most any wax will look good on the car.

Hey, another aussie! Welcome. :)

There are plenty of options that are available to you - just depends on how fat your wallet is! LOL

Here are a few local sources for detailing goodies without having to import from the states ( which can get expensive - I know from experience ).

http://www.concoursecarcare.com.au - Melbourne ( Russel )

http://www.eclipsedetailing.com.au - Sydney ( Greg )

http://www.waxwizard.com.au - Sydney ( sorry I cant remember the contact )

Will also pay to look around some local shops like Autobahn, Repco etc. An aussie version "PC" I use with good success is a Hitachi FSV 13Y Random Orbit Dual Action sander which is about $130 at Bunnings. I get the pads through Meguiars in Sydney or at Repco/Autobahn etc if I am lucky.

Cant think of anything else right now, but if you need any further help, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to help you out.

BTW, nice car. I wanted to buy a HR myself, but couldn't find a decent example at the time. Oh well.....

Welcome!

if your limited to walk-in-store products, the best you can find at something like autobarn is the meguiars or mothers range. I have spotted glimpses at my local autobarn of some zymol, autoglym and bowdens. Order from overseas though and the possibilities are endless - (so is the cost!)

You will only be able to find P21S and Klasse locally online, as for Meguiars #16 it doesn't exist in Australia! It not part of their product inventory. :( -

that gold is nice, it really sparkles.

can you get Megs #80 Speed Glaze in Australia? if you can, i would suggest that and then NXT. nice combo on metallics.

another option is to save your money and just use up your Mother's products, and when you run out and saved up enough, get the Klasse twins and a good wax. that's another combo that i think looks good on metallics.

good luck. :wavey

thanks for the replies and comments guys!

I will definitely check out that hitachi at bunnings, and those sites are awesome, thanks! I'm going to just redo the mothers thing for now, and get into the extra stuff in a couple of months when it cools down. This way I can get the process down properly with all the new products, as that seems to make the biggest difference. If I've learnt this much in the past week, in a couple of months I should be close to some sort of degree :D

thanks again!

Hi hrprem from a fellow Aussie here too.

Nice HR Premier you have there. They are so rare these days and it is good to see a proud owner who will preserve the classic.

All this talk about "Megs #xx". I am going to check out what # I have in the garage. I thought is was only "Cleaner/Polish" & "Gold Class"? BTW, I travel to the US at least once a year and you would be surprised at how inflated the prices are in OZ, eg. of Meguiars Cleaner/Polish (Maroon tub) is $4.95 +tax in US.

Welcome, the more ausssies the merrier!

You need to hunt for detailing products in Aus bit follow 6cycls links and you should be able to pick up a nice selection of great detailing products and some solid friendly advice.

I also have the Hitachi FSV 13Y and am really happy with it. I also now that some people (including pro paid detailers) use the arlec equivalent - KE125E (See www.arlec.com.au) with really good results.

It's on sale at KMART at the moment for $50.00 and if I could have found it when I bought the hitatchi would have definitely given it a go.

Got a little australian posse starting here.

It's worthwhile (IMO) to get wolfgang from autogeek. I've ordered the 64 oz and 128 oz (1.89 L and 3.78L) sealant and black diamond tire gel from them at very reasonable prices.

Some other contacts

HWimports - menzerna products

Magnum Top Gear (awesome aussie made gear) - topgear.net.au

Autoglym pro - gng sales

Pacer/Malco - pacer.com.au (pacer amazing glaze sealant is great)

Which state are you from. I'm the sole SA autopian member ATM

Good luck with your detailing, your at the best place on the net for it.

SVR, I guess you were not asking me the question about which state I am from?, as that is clear for everybody to see :D

I have a fairly good stock of polishing product on my shelf, as I buy the Meguiar's "Cleaner/Wax" (I checked the can over the w/e, I was previously calling it "cleaner/polish") and Meguiar's "Gold Class" paste which I buy on my trips to the US. Also have the Mother's Clay Bar kit.

I was fortunate to win a radio competition and got the Meguiar's "Show Car" kit and some "Gold Class" liquid, so all in all I do not need to buy anything else for a while.

Of course I will continue to survey the expert detailers on Autopia and feel really humble as I only use the consumer line of products.
