A few Rotary questions

First off, I've been using the PC for a few years and have gotten really good with it. I'm wanting to step up to a rotary now.



If you use the rotary on speeds 1 and 2 for a while to get used to it, can you still burn up the paint? I can still use my 6.5 pads with it too right? I have a lot of Lake Country pads and dont want to have to buy more. What backing plate for 6.5 pads?



Narrowed it down to Hitachi and Makita. Who has the best prices on these? I know the Makita comes with backing plate and pads but I don't think my 6.5 pads will work with it.

I went with a makita and love the machine. Rotary speeds are typically measured in Rpm's rather than a number speed (1,2 etc). I would never say that running at a low speed wont burn through paint because I'm sure it has happened. When you start with it keep it under 1200 rpms to get the feel for it, and then later when you are very comfortable, you can go to 1500, but rarely is it needed to go higher than that. Your good to go on the 6.5 inch pads; in fact, thats what I prefer.

I've also thought about the Metabo. Who has the best prices on this? You can still use the same pads and everything with the Metabo too right?

Found it for $230.00 or so but can't tell you where at this moment. it is like the other rotaries
 
Ihave two makitas and love them as far as burning the paint you can definetly still do it on low speeds the trick is keep the pad flat and always in motion do not keep it stationary.. they do make pads that are called cool it.. it helps disburse the heat a bit and will retard burning but tnot prevent it
 
CERT-what pads and backing plate are you using with yours? I'm thinking about switching to the new Lake Country CCS pads or the Variable contact.
