A few Ferraris

Detail time!
I had the pleasure working on this 1974 Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Boxer V12 this past weekend. The vehicle was repainted in single stage Glasurit back 25 years ago and hasn’t been machined polished in 18 years. Upon inspection the paint was in better condition than most new cars today! There was limited amount of contamination and swirling. And before I get too far into this, yes the car gets driven :). At first it was a little intimidating but then I was able to focus and find the correct polish and pad combination to get the finish back to new.

At first I started with the UDM and a 5.5 Lake Country CCS polishing pad with Menzerna 106FF. It did a fair amount of cutting on this single stage paint but wasn’t quite enough. I then bumped up to Wolfgang Finishing Glaze 3.0 with a low profile 5.5 Lake Country orange cutting pad which wasn’t much better either and left some micromarring. Finally I busted out the 4 pads and Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0 and a Lake Country light cut pad. This removed all but the deepest swirling and left no visible micromarring. Some panels required a second pass with the TSR3.0. Since the finish was very nice just after the TSR3.0 I finished off with a 7.5 Lake Country finishing pad with Menzerna PO85U and a PC. The final polish really amped up the finish. The black lower portions of the car were polish by hand and UDM with 4 pads with various polishes, including Powergloss, SSR2.5, ProPolish and PO85U (depending on the panel). Finally a coat of regular P21S was applied after an alcohol wipedown. Another coat of regular P21S and a single coat of P21S 100% was applied a few days apart. The interior received the Leatherique combo and Folex on the carpets. The windows were cleaned with invisible glass. The wheels were polished by hand with Bush’s metal polish.

Cliff notes:

S&W wipedown

Clay

Wolfgang TSR3.0, UDM, 4" LC orange pads

Menzerna PO85U, PC, 7.5" LC blue pads

P21s x2

P21S 100% x1

The pictures really don’t do the car justice, the car simply glows in direct sun, which is very impressive looking, especially on 20+ year old paint!

Next up is an immaculate 1988 Ferrari 328 GTB that I worked on yesterday. Everything about the car was gorgeous which makes sense because there are less than 15,000 miles on the car. The previous owner never washed it with a hose, and the paint suffered some damage from that. However, the single stage paint cleaned up nicely. The car just came out of it’s major service and now freshly detailed, this rare car is ready to get driven with pride. While I was working on the 365BB a few weeks ago the owner of the 365 was doing the mechanical work on the 328 GTB (you can see it an a few pics in the background above ...) and I was in awe by the cleanliness of it on the lift. I was hard pressed to find any grease, oil, dirt or grime anywhere on the undercarriage or suspension. A truly amazing vehicle, if I must say so myself :).

Onto the specifics on the detail… I went into it with the same game plan as the 365BB, UDM, 4 pads and Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0. Some panels required more attention than others but nonetheless, the paint recovered nicely. The TSR3.0 left no visible micro marring so I ended with Menzerna FP85U with a finishing pad. The wax of choice was P21S 100% carnauba. Total time- 7 hours for the exterior. Naturally, nothing else needed attention on this vehicle. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Process:

S&W cleaning

Clay

Wolfgang TSR3.0, UDM (and PC, UDM is starting to crap out …), 4 pads

Menzerna FP85U

P21s 100% Carnauba wax

Back to yesterday, here was the condition of the paint – 20 years of washing without water had taken its toll … but it definitely wasn’t terrible:

Cripes, the 365BB's "before" shots looked decent! The "afters" were ridiculous!!! It must be something to work on such a rare car.

I've yet to be able to break into full-blown exotics. Someday...

Anyway, awesome job on both. Stunning results.

Thanks, just keep up the good work and sooner or later the word will travel and you'll get 'the good stuff'. Word of mouth advertising is great.

nice job especially under cars shots

It would have been nice to detail the car on the lift ... It's a little hard detailing a car when the roof comes up to your belly button :p

Wow, very nice work!!

Both cars look fantastic!

Thanks. They look even better in person, pictures don't quite do them justice.

I'm doing a little Wolfgang 3.0 research, seems to be a great product

It's a very nice product. Many think it is merely SIP / Nano 106ff but after the horror stories of SIP acting up, I don't think they are identical, because they have generally been flawless to use. Little to no dusting at all, which is quite impressive. The TSR3.0 cuts a lot of swirls but leaves the finish free of micromarring.

Here are some more detailed pics of TSR3.0 used via UDM, speed 6 and a 4" orange LC pad:

Taped up for 50/50 shots, notice the marring:

Nice work man. My first Ferrari was a 79 BB512(to work on). Pretty cool cars. The cars came out great.

They surely are cool cars :)

hows the working time? I'm coming from Optimum Polish and Compound which are generally longer then I want.

With a D/A I would say the working time is less than 2 minutes. Via rotary, it'd probably be a little over one minute.
