You see a 1996 Volvo 960 wagon, rife with defects from years of neglect. There is plenty of swirling, along with various chips and scratches. You notice the seashore effect on the top of the tailgate. There is a camera nearby.

Seriously though, that car doesn't need a PC...it needs a rotary! :shocked I say find someone experienced with rotary work and have them polish the car for you. That is, if they don't have a heart attack looking at those defects :bolt

I think that car looks ready for a repaint. At minimum I think it could use the roof sanded and recleared. That could be more time consuming than painting the roof.

I also was chuckling through the whole post. And I agree with the others...that Volvo needs a lot of work. The clearcoat failure can only be corrected by repainting. The swirls and scuffs will present a challenge, as will the scratches on and behind the door handles.

Sure it's not going to be perfect . . . but there is hope. Never give up on a Volvo!! My advice is find a good detailer in your area (which is not listed in your profile) and have the majority of the issues resolved. With the products you own and some simple procedures from autopia you will be able to preserve the results from the professional polish . . er compound. . er sand in some spots. . . job. The clearcoat failure looks to be on the rear spoiler. Remove it, take it to a body shop and have it painted for like $75. Ask for a quote to touch up the rest. If you feel its worth it, giterdone.



Your kids :nixweiss (who caused the majority of the defects ) are probably old enough to know better which will make it easier to maintain.

edit: FWIW, I'd give it an estimate in the $500 range to repair the shabang.

So.. I'm gathering that the defects are pretty much there to stay. What about the swirls? I've seen worse posted, would SSR 2.5 or maybe even 3 not be enough?



I think if I can get it to ~90% less swirls, live with the chips & whatnot, I'd be ok.



I'm tempted to paintbomb the roof (the seashored part is just a bolt-on kind of mini-spoiler thing made of plastic) -- i could yank that thing off and do it, maybe. I've only got most of a weekend with the thing, so I'm gonna say some SSR work is the best it's gonna get. I hope it's enough to make a little difference. It'll never be up to my standards (see my chrome-like reflection on my black volvo maybe a month ago), but I think anything will help the green beast.

Ah, yeah the car is in San Luis Obispo, my parents car. I am unfortunately one of those kids that caused damage when the car was new, a shame I wasn't taught proper paint care early.



Any good detailers on the Central Coast?

SSR2.5 and/or SSR3 could correct the majority of the defects, even when used by PC. It will take a while, but you WILL see the swirls diminish and eventually disappear.

Wowzers... I'm smelling an extreme detail! You could always just use the car as a test platform for your more aggressive polishes and compounds. I mean, it really couldn't hurt

For the scratches behind the door handle, how aggressive would you need to go with hand polishing to reduce the swirls?

Don't even think about hand polishing. Use a 4" pad instead to get into the tight areas.

Sorry, it made me think of Strongbad. As may more experienced than I have stated, at best you'll have to live with the CC failure. The rest of the car however, could definitely be fixed. Good luck.

Good luck buddy. I don't think there's much you can do about the clear coat failure, but you may be able to reduce it's visibility. I had key marks right through the clear coat on my old car, but after polishing and sealing, you couldn't see them if you were farther than 3 feet away!
